Windows 10 Calculator Does Not Run - Disappears In Seconds

    Hello,

I have used Windows 10 Calculator for years, but recently (a few weeks back) it stopped working. Now, when I try to initiate it, it disappears in seconds. It's very disappointing, since I relied on it a lot.

I have tried various suggestions that I found thru Google searches, including using PowerShell combined with a series of specific commands, looking for new available system updates, and other approaches. I don't know why my attempted fixes don't take, or even what caused the problem.

    Can someone help?

    My OS is Windows 10 - 22H2 Build 19045.3930

    Thank you in advance

    Old PC.. please see
    Calculator app has stopped working

and read carefully... likely to be a known compatibility issue as in that thread.

Often useful to try searching tenforums...

Meanwhile- use a different calculator as suggested there.

Windows 10 Calculator Does Not Run - Disappears In Seconds

    Hello Dalchina,

Many thanks for your answer and the suggestions. I read them and will try them. The one by 'CAYENNE' seems a little scary and intimidating. I am not a technie; I'm just looking for a way (hopefully, not complicated) to bring back the beloved Win Calculator. This stuff about local admin and so forth makes me nervous. Sounds like something to do with Permissions? I don't like poking around and messing things up.

FYI, I also tried various options --- resetting the Calc, uninstalling it and downloading it, running that stuff in Powershell, and a bunch of other things. All with no success!

Anyway, thanks again. I will try those suggestions.

I recommend you do NOT try to fix the apps that don't work in this case- as shown in what I quoted and in Berton's quote above.

To get a calculator that works see:
Old Windows 7 Calculator for Windows 10
    for example.

The result of the above link - compared to the UWP app:

Windows 10 Calculator Does Not Run - Disappears In Seconds

    Hello Dalchina,

Thanks again for your ideas. The link you provided takes me to a 'WinAero' site; I arrived there earlier by following your previous suggestions and downloaded a workable calc. It seems exactly like the image shown on the left, and works. Unfortunately, it's small, frozen in the upper left corner of my screen, and I can't seem to drag it larger.

However, the image on the right looks exactly like the calc that I remember and want. How do I get that one? My intent is to be able to copy and paste into the calc and also to copy from it, as I had loved doing in the past.

    Many thanks!

    Hello,

Several classic apps from the Windows Store, such as Photos, Calendar, and Calculator have been hobbled by those running old hardware, many of the affected users running old-school hardware from the pre-Intel Core era.

Yesterday someone found there was a fix to the Photos app. (see below) And while there may or may not be a common cause, It might be worth trying the same fix to see if Microsoft has pushed a new Calculator app update.

    KB5034203 Windows 10 Cumulative Update Preview build 19045.3996 (22H2)

Hi, the Visual C++ team has identified the problem as a regression in the vclibs framework package that the Photos app and other apps depend on. The problem affects computers with older hardware (that do not support SSE 4.2 instructions). Microsoft is currently working on validating a solution and it's expected to rollout to affected customers soon.
Microsoft has produced a fix. Just make sure updates are turned on in the app store next time you use your computer. It will download the update/fix. Then next time you restart your computer it should all work fine. Mine started working again toady. Core 2 duo. You don't need to physically do anything else, download files etc.

Windows 10 Calculator Does Not Run - Disappears In Seconds

    Hello Farvatten,

Many thanks for your guidance and clarification!

In fact -- in line with what you said -- I tried executing the Windows Calculator app from the Start Menu (the icon was still there) and (lo and behold) it worked! I am truly ecstatic. The copy and paste feature has always been terrific and I loved it because I could copy into the calc and do some work there and then copy the result somewhere else!

    Problem solved!

    Great help.

Thanks also to Dalchina for the useful links and suggestions!

    Cheers!
