Snagit printer stopped working

Hello everyone.

I'm trying to help someone whose Snagit printer stopped working. It stopped working when Snagit was updated from version 21.4.2 to version 24.0.1.555.

It's a Windows 11 laptop, Version 22H2.

He's trying to print from a document, like a PDF file, to Snagit. The Snagit 2024 printer is on the printer list and you can select it, and it looks like it's going to work except nothing happens. Usually it would pop up in the the Snagit editor. I even went to Printers & scanners in the Windows settings and tried a test page from the Snagit 2024 printer listed in there. You can see it appear in the print queue and then it disappears.

We tried uninstalling and then reinstalling the software and that didn't help. I'm not sure what else to do.

I also use SnagIt, but I notice that the print dialog that I get looks very different from what you have, likely due to the app that I am printing from vs what you are using.

In order to compare apples to apples, could you try printing from something simple, for example, Notepad? I first want to see if it works from there to determine if it is related to the specific app that you are using. Also, if you could show me what the print dialog screen looks like from there, I would like to compare with what I have.

One more thought...

If the goal is simply to output to a PDF, what happens if you print to the built-in PDF printer in Windows? I'm not suggesting that this would be a permanent solution, just curious to know if that works or if it too has difficulties.

Sorry, I should have mentioned that it doesn’t print from any app, and that includes Notepad.

I also tried printing a test page from Printer & Scanners in the Windows settings, A printer labeled “Snagit 2024” is in the list with the other installed printers. When you print a test page it should open up in the Snagit editor.

The screenshot is the print dialog from Adobe Acrobat. We’re trying to print from a PDF so it comes up in the Snagit editor.

I found an answer and wanted to share it in the off chance it will help someone else.

Here's what I did:

-Close Snagit. Open task manager and click on the Processes tab and make sure there are no SnagIt process running.

-Open the Registry Editor and browse to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\TechSmith\SnagIt

-Right click the Snagit folder and choose export, and save it to the desktop. This is your back up.

-Once the Snagit folder has been backed up, right click on the SnagIt registry key and choose delete

-Restarted SnagIt and it worked
