Stop text editor from minimizing to systray

I use Notetab. It's portable. I haven't changed the settings for years, but now it minimizes to the tray.

It's not set for that. It's not enabled in "Select which Icons appear on the taskbar.

The ability to minimise to the SysTray is not managed by "Select which Icons appear on the taskbar" but by the app itself.
That's assuming you meant what you wrote - that the app disappears from the Taskbar and only appears in the SysTray.

I suggest you ask for help from Notetab's publishers.

    All the best,
    Denis

Since Portable apps are not actually installed and not listed in the Registry some settings won't work. I have several useful apps on a USB Thumb drive.

Are you sure that it's portable? I checked the manufacturer's website and there is no portable version available to download. There is a zip version but if extracting the files and launching the executable it actually installs the program.

    I'd say check settings here:

Stop text editor from minimizing to systray-notetab-light.jpg

Also check the settings file (.ini) here:

    C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\NoteTab Light

Stop text editor from minimizing to systray-notetab-light-settings.jpg

Change the 1 to 0 if it exists.

Other than that rename the settings file to Notetab.ini.old and relauch it and reconfigure settings.

Never mind. I found the portable version elsewhere. Let me launch that after uninstalling the version that I just used/ installed.

So the portable version has the same options. You can edit the settings and check them by opening the settings file inside the application's folder. Location is wherever you placed it.

    C:\Portable Apps\Portable NoteTab\NoteTab.ini

You can also rename that file as already suggested.

Just to be clear check view> options

Stop text editor from minimizing to systray-options.jpg

If close to tray and icon in system tray are not checked then I'd suggest a manual search for the settings file. If found rename it. If multiple copies are found keep only one copy.

Thanks to everyone for chiming in.

This isn't the first time lately that I've reported a problem that went away after I posted about it. Weird.

My main gripe was that although I had no problem with it showing on the taskbar when opened, but that it was closing to the systray.
But wait, the mystery take a left turn. Now, it no longer shows in the systray, even when this is set. It never occurred to me that the .ini might be corrupted, so I replaced it with a backup. Didn't matter.

Okay then I have an idea. Misbehaving system tray icons might be fixed by clearing old ones.

You might run the batch file Reset_Notification_Area_Icons_Cache.bat here:

Reset Notification Area Icons in Windows 10

Before you do that I'd suggest changing the setting "Always show all icons in the notification area" in this image temporarily to off if it's currently set to "on".

Yeh, I mentioned that in my OP

I don't know why, but the OS is finally recognizing the Notetab settings, maybe because I needed to do that Macrium restore due to the KB5034441 WU corruption.

I have a weird, I guess what one might call a "chronic" issue, that emerges randomly, every once in a while, often after a WU. Unfortunately, that batch file backfired on me. After I ran it , this problem I have reemerged.

This is how you would expect your systray taskbar area to look like when two icons appear there

Stop text editor from minimizing to systray-screenshot_a.png

But, when this glitch is alive, and a third items is added to that area,

Stop text editor from minimizing to systray-screenshot_01.png

this is what happens. In this scenario, after an item is drag 'n dropped to that area (in this case Bluetooth), a blank area to the right of the icons is created, and Bluetooth replaces one of the original icons, in this case the LIghtshot icon (probably because it was the first icon in that area originally), and Lightshot becomes hidden under that blank area. There's room for two icons under there.

Stop text editor from minimizing to systray-screenshot_2.png

If you want to reveal one of the hidden icons, move a new icon to that area, or just drag one of the icons already in the visible area to the blank area, and the two will switch places

More icons added after that will end up in a situation like this

Stop text editor from minimizing to systray-screenshot_f.png

Stop text editor from minimizing to systray-screenshot_d.png

I'm sure it had nothing to do with the .bat, given this quirky bug. Thanks for letting me vent.

    I can only suggest:

Exit (close program) as many installed or portable programs as possible if their icons are present in the system tray. Ignore system icons like battery/ network/ volume.

Make a note of those and check for updates for each if them. Install updates if available.

If you install updates, again exit those programs so that their icons are not present in the system tray.

Then run the batch file again and wait for it to complete then reboot.

If it only happens intermittently then it's likely triggered by running or launching one of the (third party) programs that you can see in the system tray.
