    VLC Increase the Volume

When I watch a video from my windows 10 PC to my big screen tv using VLC there is NO sound. I am using an hdmi cable to do this. If I use the Media Player, the sound is OK, but I want to use VLC and should work.

I have watched Video on how to increase the volumn on VLC by 300% . When I get into VLC the instructions do NOT match what I am seeing.

Can someone walk me thru the procedures to get the volumn up on VLC? It would be a great help.

    Thanks.

I know nothing of any 300%, but in VLC you not only have to turn the volume up, but you need to tell it... where to go, so to speak.
I use an older version of VLC, but this should get you on the right track.

The two smaller pics at the bottom, are the settings that make the voices and the FX approx. the same volume.
    Aka Loudness Equalization.

Ghot (grinnging) that would be great if I could actually see those images and tell what is on them. They are thumbnails? and I am 80 yrs old.

I have actually uninstalled VLC and reinstalled the latest (?) version from the VLC home page. It actually works fine when I play music, but NOT when I play a video. Crazy huh.

If you could get those images bigger it sure would help.

    Thanks

Right click the image and select open in new tab. Then zoom in if you need to.

Click on the image and then click on the image again and then click on the image once more. It will enlarge the images in order to be able to view them. Otherwise, you could temporarily increase the Zoom for the page.

Anyway, I have just looked at my notes and this is what I have to do . . .

    • Click Tools > Preferences.
    • Click Audio Tab > Check: Enable Audio.
    • Under Output > Click the Output Module: Drop-Down > Select DirectX audio output > Save > Red Cross.

If this does NOT work, then just put the Output Module: Drop-Down back to Automatic.

    I hope this helps.

I think Paul is on the right track with Tools > Preferences > Audio tab but I also think the dropdown for HDMI/SPDIF audio passthrough may need to be changed from Disabled to Enabled:

    Hope this helps...

    Just a thought,
I'm not using VLC but media player classic which I came across something similar.
There it had to do with multilingual videos that had on different channels different languages.
The issue I had was that on some of them the English Channel was on a different one which was not active or selected.
Then there were also a variety of audio switches decoders.
    Just my two cents.

OK first let me say what I have done.

Open VLC using a video. Go to "Tools --> Prefrences".
Select the "Audio" tab and on the left select "Normalize Volume to" and these is box just to the right to increase the volume to say 400.
    Now click "Save".

Did nothing I could tell so next"
Opened VLC using a video. Go to "Tools --> Prefrences".
Scroll way down and at "Show setting" select "All", then scroll up and expand "Main interfaces" and select "Qt"
This opens some options on the right. Scroll down to "Maximum Volume displayed" enter in the box to the right 300.

Now saved it. Did NOT change or help in any way.

That was it in a nut shell.

RickC, I change the Disabled to Enabled. Far as I can tell nothing has helped the situation..

Guess I just need to give up on VLC. It seems such a great player, but for me it just does NOT want to work.

    Thanks guys

sounds like muted. Could it be a driver [output] related issue?
I would have to reinstall VLC it and see if I can re-create your issue.

Since I have pretty much the same set up like you and my PC is connected via HDMI to my 55 inch UHD monitor which doubles besides from being a TV also as a high definition computer monitor, I never encountered that problem.

However there's one thing to say about HDMI cables Years ago when I set this up like that I had random screen blackouts and occasionally some audio issues.
Spent some money on a good HDMI 2.1 cable and all issues vanished.

Try this, before you run out and spend money on a HDMI cable:

Downloads the reputable and excellent freeware K-Lite codec which also comes with the media player classic. I'm using it for years and it runs even exotic formats.
Install it, also install the media player and play your video.
    Got sound?

If yes, we can focus on the VLC.
If no, we can focus on the cable and some other potential issues.
By the way what is equipment? i.e. RAM, CPU, video card and driver?

3bit, like you I have been also using K-Lite for years and yes when use it other than VLC, I have a good video picture and sound.

I really just wanted to use VLC for personal reasons. I know that is stupid. USE WHAT WORKS FOR ME.

Two more questions and I will stop:

Is there anyway to open VLC without using a video or audio file?
I know there are a lot of free video players out there. Are there any other good recommendations?
