Winaero as malware - is this credible?

Win 10 Tweaker Unwanted Application - Uninstall instructions, and PC cleanup

What do you guys think? I have Winaero installed on my system, Win 10 Pro, and Norton Security does not flag this program.

I hope this is supposed to be humorous.
Winaero Tweaker is NOT Win 10 Tweaker.

    This is Winaero Tweaker...

its a Russian program by the looks of it which does not mean anything but Russian software has always been questionable. Not saying this because of the current world affairs, this has always been the case well before the war.

here is a backstory on the application and it is apparently known to have backdoors.
    ?????? ? Win 10 Tweaker, ??? ??????????? ?????? ?????? ? ?????????? | ??????

Just translate that post it says it all. My browser guard stopped me from even downloading the application.

    Hello @x509,

I always customise my systems [ normally through Scripting ] and found that Winaero Tweaker was one of the best and is really quite good. I did test out Win 10 Tweaker a few years ago and it did NOT fit my needs.

So to answer your question, Winaero Tweaker is credible, but personally I would NOT like to say the same for Win 10 Tweaker, although I did NOT have any problems with it while testing and using it a few years ago.

    I hope this helps.

Multiple antivirus scanners on VirusTotal detect the installer for Win 10 Tweaker as malicious. Therefore, it is strongly recommended not to trust this program. It is very likely that Win 10 Tweaker is promoted using questionable download sources.
In other words, he considers it as malicious merely based on VT detection. I use software with VT detections.
Some AVs literally say: Not-a-virus:UDS:RiskTool - because it can "damage" Windows, like to disable Defender.

Win 10 Tweaker may be bundled with malware or other unwanted software such as adware.
Recently Google promoted a lot of legitimate apps like 7zip bundled with malware, that is not app's fault.
Always download from the homepage or trusted sources to avoid something like that and it should be fine.

Hackers push malware via Google search ads for VLC, 7-Zip, CCleaner

It's nothing to do with Winaero Tweaker. It's a totally different program. Story translated from Russian found during a search:

Someone collected all known versions and posted them on Github for testing with the caveat:

    # Win 10 Tweaker by XpucT Almost All Versions

Collection of all versions found in internet, if you found more make pull request.

**WARNING: DO NOT RUN IN REAL SYSTEM, ONLY IN VM, preferably with disabled internet**

Try to download it and Defender blocks it.

I could not even download it because my browser guard blocks it and because of the way the website is coded i couldn't even VT the download link without actually downloading the program and VTing that instead which i was stopped in doing.

Safe to say its no good if multiple people are coming to the same conclusion.

As the OP here I think this post is an example of PEBKAC on my part.

Sorry to waste everyone's time. That said, @Malneb's post #3 was very informative, and a necessary caution.
