Once you remove other screenshot programs so that PrtSc key is free and not binded "Snip & Sketch" should bind itself to the key.

Then simply press PrtSc key to dim your screen and use mouse to select an area, as soon as you do this in notification center you'll se a message with screenshot, click on it and save it where ever you want.

Here is a demo, click on link to see animation, I do all this with just a mouse and no extra procedure beyond pressing the PrtSc key to dim my desktop for selection:

You however need to bind PrtSc key to "Snip & Sketch" as follows:

    1. Open Settings app in start menu.
    2. Click on Ease of Access.
    3. Click on Keyboard.
    4. Under the “Print Screen shortcut” section, turn on the “Use the PrtScn button to open screen snipping” toggle switch.

After this procedure simply press the PrtSc key for capture, there is no need to open the "Snip & Sketch" program each time.
I appreciate the info, but I already have both setup. Microsoft program vs non-Microsoft program? I just want something that suits my needs, and works properly.

I like both programs, but as I previously asked, is there a way to bypass the Snip & Sketch interface and save the file directly?

If not unless I'm planning to edit the image, I'll use Greenshot,

Sadly there is no option to autosave a snip to disk.

Snip is however auto copied to clipboard meaning you can ignore notification message, I personally don't see any need to save a snip to disk since usually you take a snip to share it, so all it takes is to CTRL + V into imgur without needing to save anything: Imgur: The magic of the Internet

    edit:
It seems there is a workaround,
snip file is saved into: %LOCALAPPDATA%\Packages\Microsoft.ScreenSketch_8wekyb3d8bbwe\TempState

so you might want to create a shortcut to this location.

"lots" to choose from when it comes to taking photos to videos from screen recording.

Screenshot Ultra 1.3 ( you have to add a version number otherwise you get odd results ). Is what I use when I just want to click Prntscrn ( etc ) button and not have to care. You can set the format type and folder location. I am not sure if this was free or not, but now my version says it is free. I remember using it in the past on Vista. That being said it might have memory problems down the road so do not use it ( keep it on ) for long periods of time, or even consider exiting if your not using. However I have kept it running in the background waiting for my finger. Most of my images is from this program. If not using "Manual" methods.

For free is OBS studio. Have fun figuring this out. OBS is the defacto standard of anything desktop recording at the cost of resource consumption made specifically for youtubing, and streaming video to various online video-sites. There are even add-ons / plugins that allows you to use your phone as a camera but might cost money for 4k.

Not "for free" is Camtasia. Keep in mind their is the Windows 10 release ( which is what I use ) that has nothing to do with Edge and the later releases that has something to do with edge ( in my opinion makes it worthless to me ). Camtasia does a lot of things as well. Maybe a free version is out there. Most people seem to use Classic mode for some reason.

Irfanview - You use prntscrn button, then paste ( open program ) to this program and save manually to any format. Again this is manually not automated.

Corel Draw Graphics suite 20_ _ ??? - is a program called " Corel Capture". You have to check it out yourself, because that is an entire suite. The program has been with various releases under different names for the longest. You set a "hotkey" and leave it running. ( I think unlike ScreenCapture Pro you can use almost any key to proceed with capturing. Corel Capture might be downloadable for free or transferable from a Corel suite already setup. Corel is highly prolific in South America region for some reason.

Capture Wiz - is an 9x generation program and has various Memory problems but you can setup a fair area to capture in both video, and photos, along with converting into GIF. You can capture something on screen in it's propitiatory format and play it back
simular to flash ( but again this is not flash nore uses flash and is able to playback without any codecs or installations ??? ) Later releases have fixed the memory problems but beyond that is an extremely great program for short and long conversions of video
and taking photos. It is not free to my understanding. Has a simple movable bar and ready to be used. I have not used in awhile but it can still run on my Win 10.

If not unless I'm planning to edit the image, I'll use Greenshot,
Greenshot lets you automatically save the screenshot to disk and lets you set a default folder for that.

Excellent! It's really the ideal replacement for Lightshot and the simple, quick save. More versatile as well, allowing for custom title formats, default folder, etc.

I'm glad you made your choice, greenshot is cool, as I said I've been using it for some 2 years, but it ultimately failed my demands.
Major issue I have with greenshot is that it's a medieval software very rarely updated or not updated at all.
Also several times it failed to resport to prtsc key.

But what ever makes you happy is fine.

btw. reason why I said MS program vs. non-MS program is not because I like MS, but rather because less software on computer means less clutter, faster system and lower chance to install malware or badware, that's the only reason to use built-in software.
