Software to create .BIN or .MDS file or backup of a data disc?

Hello, I am having a really hard time with backing up multi-track (or multi-session?) data discs. They are not video DVD's, rather they are data discs.

ImgBurn states it cannot create a .ISO or .BIN file from a multi track DVD. It does state that I can go in to build mode and select the folders on the disc to make them in to a .ISO or .BIN file, but this is not an adequate solution as it adds extra steps and since the software is not able to natively deal with multi-track discs I do not trust it to create any type of reliable backup/image file for these type of discs.

CDBurnerXP seems to be able to make a .BIN file with no complaints, but the file is so small that I do not trust it to include all of the data.

I have searched and searched and I understand that a .ISO file is not able to be made from a multi-track disc, but rather that I must use .BIN or .MDS, but the threads I have found discussing that have no mention of another software that is able to natively handle the creation of a backup file of a multi-track disc. Unfortunately, trying to search for programs that support making these file types seems to result in simply a mess of things that have nothing to do with creating an image file from a disc.

So my question is: what trusty free software (or paid software if I really must) is able to very easily make some type of backup file, be it .BIN or .MDS or something else entirely, simply by pointing the software to my DVD drive? TIA!

you could have a look at winiso. I have never used to create a .bin however it is there as an option

Thanks, I will look in to the capabilities of Roxio, but again a .ISO file is not able to be created from a multi-track disc, thus why a .BIN or .MDS (or potentially some other type that I am unaware of at this current time) would be needed.

I do want to point out (mostly for anyone in the future who may reference this thread) that multi-track and multi-use are different things. A disc being of the RW type would not inherently make it multi-track. The DVD's in question are DVD-R format. As a side note, I have also ran in to this same error recently when trying to make backup files of DVD-R's that had video recorded to them by means of a Panasonic DVD recorder.

As for the current conundrum, BurnAwareFree seems to have made a very large .BIN file from the disc, but unlike a .ISO file, Windows 10 cannot natively mount this file type. I previously would use MagicDisc for mounting disc images with Windows 7, however it seems it will not install on my system running Windows 10 22H2. I did find VirtualClone Drive, which was able to mount the .BIN file, but Windows states the disc is corrupt. I am trying to find other virtual disc software that runs on Windows 10 to see if I get this same result.

AnyBurn has proved to successfully make a .BIN file from the discs very easily! I will mark this thread as solved. I will definitely be keeping AnyBurn in my tool set.

I was able to verify that it worked properly using both VirtualClone Drive and DAEMON Tools Lite, both of which have also now earned a spot in my tool set.






WinCDEmu was something else I had tried and fails to install its driver on my system. This and MagicDisc failing to install may both be unique to my system. I will see if these will install on another system with a fresh install of Windows 10. I will also try WinISO when I get a chance.

I had also tried Alcohol120%, which I was not impressed with as it would not mount the disc image using either the .BIN file or its associated .CUE file.








TLDR: For me, AnyBurn worked great and is very easy to use as well. It created a .BIN and the associated .CUE file. I was able to mount the disc image using both DEAMON Tools Lite and VirtualClone Drive.

anyburn can be very useful. It doesnt have the quick save feature of winiso, which doesnt matter unless doing a lot of iso editing.

winiso can also use multiboot images which anyburn cant, but there is a workaround that can be used with anyburn.
