    Can't create Linux USB

I'm trying to use rufus (also tried unetbootin) to write an iso to a usb but Autoplay keeps popping up in the corner saying there's a problem with the drive and it needs to be scanned, and then the drive starts to appear and disappear from explorer causing rufus to error.

This is on Windows 11. I've disabled autoplay but I'm not sure how to stop windows from thinking the drive is corrupted.

    Hello @mkr10001,

[1] Have you scanned the drive ?
[2] You could try the below and then try creating the Bootable USB again.

DISKPART - Clean and Format USB

To Reset a USB back to how it was New . . .

    Clean AND Format:

[1] Type cmd in the Search box.
[2] In the Right-Hand Pane, select CMD - Run as Administrator.
[3] Type EACH command below Individually into the CMD Prompt and press Enter.

    diskpart
    list disk
select disk # Where # is the USB Disk Number.
attributes disk clear readonly OPTIONAL - Use if USB shows as Read-Only in Disk Management.
clean This will ERASE EVERYTHING from the USB.
    create partition primary
    format fs=fat32 quick
    exit
    exit

    NOTE:

If there is ANYTHING on the USB that you want to KEEP, copy them somewhere else FIRST as this will DELETE EVERYTHING on the USB.

    I hope this helps.

Thanks, it was doing it on two different drives but I've just tried your method on one of them and it still happens. The message from rufus says explorer is using the drive with (r) I think means read. i even tried killing explorer before starting and it still gets interrupted.

    Post a screenshot.

[1] Have you tried Formatting the USB FIRST to see if that makes a difference ?
[2] Have you tried ANOTHER USB ?

    I hope this helps.

I have a couple of Linux bootable USB Thumb drives in my toolbox. Both were created outside of Windows as the format of the drives is not recognized by Windows, usually comes up as Unformatted or do you want to format. One way I've used is to download an .iso file [I favor Mint], create the DVD in Windows [I use Roxio Easy CD and DVD Creator but there's free versions on the 'net such as CDBurnerXP] then boot to the DVD. It has an app called USB Image Writer that uses the downloaded .iso file as the Source to create the Thumb drive. Linux can recognize/use several formats that Windows can't, quite useful in saving data when Windows can't boot up.
