How To Get Rid Of White Space On Paint

There's probably an easy answer to this, but I'm not sure what it is. How do I change Paint so I don't have all the white space to the right and below images I paste to it then save - usually as jpegs?

    They save like this -

Click on the rectangular Select icon,
click & drag your cursor around the area you want to keep,
click on Crop [just next to the Select icon].

    Hello @woodbine,

What I did was to click the bottom right of the White area and drag it up to the top left, leaving about a 1 cm square. Then whenever I open Paint, it defaults to that size. I never have to change it and I can just Paste the image without worrying about adjusting the White area.

    I hope this helps.

Or you can use the Snipping Tool and not have to use PrntScrn key or Paste into Paint

I must admit, that is my preferred method, especially for images that I insert for this Forum etc.

    spunk, Paul,

Out of interest, how would you save a diagram using jpg compression?
    - I have MSOffice 2007 so I have MSOffice Picture manager. MSOffice 2010 users also have this tool. There is some sort of equivalent in Excel for Microsoft 365, Office 2016 & Office 2013 but I don't understand what it is. PSP & Corel can also compress jpgs.
    - I can, for example, apply 50% jpg compression to reduce a 3MB photo to 300KB without any noticeable reduction in image quality & without making the picture itself any smaller.
I don't know how I would do this using any built-in Windows tools.

    All the best,
    Denis

Usually, I do this way: with the free snipping tool choose the area, after clicking on 'save as Image', after choosing the folder, and save as .jpg

As others have said, the snipping tool would be more convenient, it can save as .png, ,jpg or .gif.

But if you must use Paint, perhaps to mark up the screenshot before saving, then the trick is to first open Paint and make sure that its image size is smaller than the screenshot you are going to paste. The canvas will expand to fit if you paste a larger image, but it does not shrink to fit if you paste a smaller one.
