HP Image Assistant - How do you un-install the previous version?

I installed the current version, HPIA 5.1.6, a few days ago, and it didn't over-write 5.1.5

How do you un-install HPIA 5.1.5?

If I go to the SW folder:
    1.) I don't see an un-install exe
2.) If I run the 5.1.5 installer, there is no option there to un-install

I don't see it, or 5.1.6, in Program Files

    Hello @mb1280,

I don't know if this helps, but if it shows up in Installed Programs for example, you could try uninstalling it from there, or, you could try this to see if it finds it . . .

     Revo Uninstaller - FREE

    About Revo Uninstaller - FREE:

The Uninstaller module is Revo Uninstaller ‘s primary feature for situations when a program won’t uninstall normally or when you have some doubts that a program has not been uninstalled completely.

Also when a program is uninstalled, often times there are multiple files, folders, and/or Registry entries left on your system, which can cause various issues if not removed. This happens more frequently than you might think.

Revo Uninstaller acts as both a replacement and a supplement to the built-in functionality in Windows by first running the built-in uninstaller for the program, and then scanning for leftover data afterwards, making it your best choice when it comes to completely remove stubborn programs, temporary files, and other unnecessary program data that is left behind after the standard uninstall process.

Revo Uninstaller now has the ability to delete Microsoft Apps - under its own Tab.

I find that when uninstalling software, Revo Uninstaller [ FREE ] is excellent. It has an option to Scan for leftover items after the initial uninstall [ using the software own uninstall process if one exists ] using an Advanced Scan option.

    > Website & Download => Revo Uninstaller [ FREE ]

Here is some additional detailed information that is very nicely explaind by our Forum member @idgat; . . .

    > Additional Revo Uninstaller Information.

If the new installation works OK, then you could just leave the old one installed. I wouldn't think that it would cause any future problems.

    I hope this helps.

Hi! Thanks for the info. I've used Revo before for something else.

But, why doesn't it show up in Program Files?

Like with MS / Programs and Features / View Installed Updates - wouldn't there be some place that shows HP Updates?

Nothing in HPIA shows them, nor in HP Support Assistant.
They must be humanly accessible somewhere.
Or, would HP have another program available for this purpose?
It would be good to have this as common knowledge, rather than to rely on 3rd party.

I use HP Image Assist. It doesn't appear as an installed program. Each version gets unpacked into the folder you specify. I just delete folders for the old versions with no ill effects.

    Thanks for the info

Previously, when doing HP updates, and not being able to install something,
I have deleted the folder, so that I knew the contents of the extracted folder would be new.
I never noticed any problem, but it seemed like I should be going through Programs and Features.
I guess that's not true. They're like Portable Files (self-contained), perhaps?

These look like all the HP folders on my C:,
some from using the previous Software Download Manager (SDM) - I think that's what it was called:

    0 in C:\HPSDM
    504. MB in C:\hpswsetup
    39.9 MB in C:\SoftPaqDownloadDirectory
    9.56 GB in C:\SWSETUP

I have wondered if I can get rid of some SP's that make up the 9.56 GB

Any idea if I can delete the others?

    * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

These are the only programs (6 of them) that show up for HP in my Programs and Features:

HP BIOS Configuration Utility / HP Inc. 06/08/17 15.7 MB 4.0.15.1
HP Connection Optimizer / HP Inc. 08/28/22 2.0.13.0
HP Display Assistant / Portrait Displays, Inc. 04/20/18 38.3 MB 3.20.016
    HP Documentation / Hewlett-Packard 07/16/20
HP Hotkey Support / HP Inc. 04/11/20 16.6 MB 6.2.55.1
HP Performance Advisor / HP Inc. 09/21/19 15.1 MB 2.1.4431

If I figured out the SP for these 6 programs, do you think I could delete all the others with no problem, to free up space?

And, I think I could even delete the SP for these 6 programs, with no problem - If I wanted to delete those, you go through Programs and Features for that, apparently.

Do you know of an HP web page that confirms this?

You don't need to keep any files in swsetup once installed since the drivers can be downloaded again. Only the BIOS and hotkey programs are rally essential.

You are correct that HP Image Assistant is not installed, but treated like portable files. This allows you to put it on USB flash drives and carry it around. If you have upgraded (now 5.1.7), just delete the old folder location.

I see these 3 folders on my C:

    HPSDM . . . 0 KB
    hpswsetup . . . 50.4 MB
    SWSETUP . . . 9.54 GB

Would it be safe to simply delete these folders, and their contents?

The 9.54 GB one, is the main one.

Maybe any future HP software installs would re-create the directory it needs, but maybe not, I don't know.

These are the only HP programs, listed in my Programs

    HP Documentation Hewlett-Packard
Discover HP Touchpoint Manager Hewlett-Packard Company 05/16/17 936 KB 1.0.17.1
    Dot4 HP 12/24/18 1.50 MB 1.0.0.0
HP BIOS Configuration Utility HP Inc. 06/08/17 15.7 MB 4.0.15.1
HP Connection Optimizer HP Inc. 08/28/22 2.0.13.0
HP Hotkey Support HP Inc. 04/11/20 16.6 MB 6.2.55.1
HP PC Hardware Diagnostics Windows HP Inc. 12/16/22 2.0.0.0
HP Performance Advisor HP Inc. 09/21/19 15.1 MB 2.1.4431
HP Support Assistant HP Inc. 12/04/22 9.22.14.0

If all the HP programs are like Portable Files, then it would be safe.

And, the HP programs I have installed, could successfully be de-installed though programs, without the corresponding "SP" being on my C:

The only thing that has stopped me from doing this, is that I don't know if the above work together, or not.

HPDSM is probably from HP Software Download Manager but that was EOL years ago. If that's it, you can delete that folder.
    I'm not sure about hpswsetup.
SWSETUP is the default folder where HP SoftPaqs (the SP folders) are stored when you install them. This is the default location where HP Image Assistant (HPIA) is installed. The SP folder name is the SoftPaq number.

If you know for sure you aren't using a particular SoftPaq, then you can delete the SP folder name with that number under SWSETUP. From the list of programs you had, the ones I am aware of are uninstalled from Programs and Features, and are not portable files like HPIA.
