Please recommend a free DVD player for Win10
I am looking for a free app that will allow me to play a movie DVD in the computer's drive. Ideally it would automatically open and go to the DVD's menu like a regular DVD player does so that I don't have to remember when I don't use it for a few months but what's most important is that it is simple to use and free.
BTW: I have Windows Media Player installed and I found something online that says it should play DVDs but I can't figure out how to find the DVD with it.

go to settings , apps , default apps ,video player .
windows media player should be listed .click it .
insert dvd in disk drive and it should start playing automatically yea ?
or you could install a 3rd party player ,like VLC , and choose that as default player .
otherwise go to file manager , D: , ect. ...

I did that. Nothing happened. I tried again with Media layer open and still nothing.
I wondered if the problem might be an autoplay setting so I went to Control Panel>Autoplay, scrolled to DVDs and looked at the options for DVD movie. There was no entry for Windows Media Player but the first item on the list was Play DVD movie (VideoLan VLC media player) so I selected that. (I also selected it in the Enhanced DVD movie list).
I put a DVD in the drive, VLC opened and it played automatically. Perfect.
I turned the DVD over for the HD side and it didn't read. Probably the drive can't handle that. Too bad.
Thanks for the help. I wouldn't have bothered with the autoplay settings if 3nd hadn't said it should play automatically and I wouldn't have selected VLC if Paul hadn't recommended it.
Now when a branch falls on a wire a few towns over in a winter storm and our cable internet goes out we'll still be able to watch something

No.
WMP in Windows 10 cannot play DVDs.
WMP in Windows 10 has never been able to play DVDs.
WMP in Windows 10 will never be able to play DVDs.
Removing this capability was a deliberate act by MS.

I guess they did that so they could sell us the Windows DVD player app....

Applications that can play DVDs apparently have to pay the patent owners for that privilege. I thought this was stated in an MS article but I do not have any link to it so I think that means I just read what somebody else said in a forum post.
They made the Windows DVD player app free at first, presumably in an attempt to get a decent population of users who would say it was worthwhile. But I don't know if many people even tried it then.
Like everybody else, I now use third-party applications to play DVDs.
I mostly use an old version of Cyberlink & a new version of DVBViewer [which I have because I use it to record from my USB TV tuners].
I understand that many people use VLC.
Best of luck,
Denis

+1 for VLC.
Don’t consider MS DVD player as it’s not free & it’s rubbish.
You can also try WMP classic which I downloaded as part of K-Lite codec pack.
