Problem with File Associations in Win 10

The problem with Win10's File Associations is linking ONLY to Apps.

I have a 'program' called "Notepad++" that I want to use for all '.txt' & '.ini' files, but I cannot associate these file-types with "Notepad++"

I found out that I cannot even use the Registry to edit File Associations.

Anyone know of a fix to allow File Associations to programs?

Hello Teckmage, and welcome to Ten Forums.

Are you able to use the "Open with" context menu to "Always use this app" for these file types like in the tutorial below?

The question of Notepad++ association has been discussed several times on tenforums- if you care to search tenforums, you will probably find a solved post fairly easily:

Are you using the installed or the portable version?

If all else fails, try e.g.
    Default Programs Editor (free).

    Hi.

    Welcome to Windows Ten Forums.

Also. you can always save the Notepad++ file as a .TXT via the Save As drop-down box.
There are also numerous other File Formats it can save to.

The program default is a Normal Text File which is: .TXT

I don't think that you can associate it via Apps (by file type) unless there is some W10 workaround.
I'm unsure if this is a W10 thing or by the nature of the Notepad++ program.

I'll look around for other possible solutions.

    Hi again -

I believe that I found the requested solution:

    1) Create a default plain text Notepad++ file and save it to your Desktop.
    2) Select Open With -> Choose another app.
    3) Drill down into Program Files (x64) to find the Notepad++ .exe and associate.
    4) Go into Default Apps -> Choose Default Apps by File Type -> .txt
    5) In the list of choices, Notepad++ should appear for you to associate it.

    Kindly advise.

    Thanks.

Apparently you have some work to do in Notepad++ settings first.

Seems that there are more tweaks involved within the program, doesn't it.

The problem is Notepad++ is NOT an App, so all the normal deal with Apps.

    Enable:
    Code:
    reg add "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\notepad.exe" /v "Debugger" /t REG_SZ /d "\"%ProgramFiles%\Notepad++\notepad++.exe\" -notepadStyleCmdline -z" /f

    Disable:
    Code:
    reg delete "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\notepad.exe" /v "Debugger" /f

It automatically overrides all Notepad default association for me. And Notepad++ Becomes the Default editor.
