    [REQ]App burn without wasting space

Having so many files to burn, is there an app that automatically calculates how to divide them to avoid wasting space on DVDs?

I found a program that will do it (and scans clean),
The only problem is it wants you to buy software to actually burn the disks or create an ISO for each disk.

BUT... it WILL produce text file of which files to burn to each DVD.
That would mean you would have to find those files, and use a free program like AnyBurn, to create an ISO or burn them to the DVDs.

The program is called Ignition, and you can find it on this page...

    KC Softwares

Ignition creates .c2c files ( in: C:\Users\user name\AppData\Roaming\KC Softwares\Ignition), for each DVD (after sorting), that can only be read by the other program they want you to buy. It requires "CopyTo"DVD which costs $30.

But it WILL sort your files into the most efficient grouping and give you the LIST... in text files.

For the moment this is fine because before burning it shows me the subdivision so I burn with the app I prefer, the only problem is that it makes me choose which type of DVD to use, so it does not calculate if I have both DVD that DVD DL, anyway thanks is very useful

Ignition makes you choose the media type as well... before it optimizes the list.
However, you can pretty much conclude that 2x DVD = 1 DVD DL.

Wait one second. I did find another program that will do what you want for free... but on Virustotal, Malwarebytes turned up a warning. Maybe be false positive. No other respectable AV engines turned anything up.
Gimme a second to find it again.

This will optimize AND create the ISO, no text files involved... all free.
It's called Burn To The Brim... Burn to the Brim: Home

It scanned clean locally. And here are the Virustotal results...

it is a false positive, however, the other one is better this is too old, I think it only uses CDs and does not show the list but directly creates the ISO

Yeah... depending on the file sizes we're talking about... the list might be better... like for movies of mixed format, for example. But if it's a bazillion pics... a list might be a pain in the app.

    @donnje

I don't know why you're attempting all this... but you might also want to consider a large USB stick.
They are getting really cheap. The same can be said for hard drives (internal or external).

Also... backup software might be an option.

Back in the CD/DVD days if I wanted to just burn a bunch of files (but fill the media), I would use File Explorer to sort for file size. Then in my burning program, I would grab as many big files as I could from the top of the list, then fill in any extra space with teeny files, from the bottom of the list.

...and I know what you mean. I still make CD or DVD copies of things like bootable media... etc.
Just last week, I found some CDs with files I thought I'd lost forever... from 2002 and 2003.

    /edit

But even I broke down eventually... I got one of these...
