    File Associations

    Hui,
By mistake an extension has been linked to an incorrect app, how can I set W10 to ask me which app to associate?
I don't want to change the associated app but I would like you to ask me which one so that the icon is not associated
    Tnx

    Hi @donnje

You should be able to right click > Open With, then it bring up this diologue:

    File Associations-2022-02-14_18h30_55.png

From which you can select one and check ' Always use this app to open .... files '

    Hope it helps.

thanks but as written I don't want to choose another app but I would like the file to still be associated with the first app as a default consequently the icon would not be that of the associated app but white

So basically are you saying you want to choose which app every time?

    @donnje

Can you try creating a dummy program?

Open Windows File Explorer. On the view Ribbon (tab) check the box marked 'File Name Extensions'. Close File Explorer.

Right click your Desktop and choose New - Text File. Right click that text file and choose rename, then change the file extension on that new file from .txt to .exe. Confirm the change.

Right click any file of the type you want to work with, choose open with - Choose another App. Check the box marked 'Always use this app to open .xxx files' - IMPORTANT! Scroll to the bottom and click 'More Apps', Again scroll to the bottom and choose 'Find another app on this PC'

Navigate to the dummy file exe on your Desktop and click OK. The file will not open, this is expected. Delete the dummy exe file on your Desktop and restart your PC

The file association will then be broken and you will be prompted what app to use for that file type each time!

    Hope it helps,

Thank you, and it's no problem.
Now, all that's left to do is mark this as solved
