I don't care what anyone says - IMHO, the cloud is not secure - better enhancing your local storage for personal documents.
Now, if you are talking about File Sharing, that's another subject.

I use OneDrive for limited items that are not sensitive.

Onedrive is backed by MS who probably have the best infrastructure in the world, with multiple redundancy in case systems fail.

On what basis do you suggest the cloud is not secure?

If people use weak passwords, for sure, but that is true of everything these days.

Onedrive has the Personal Vault which can only be accessed with additional authentication even if a hacker got onto your onedrive.

How OneDrive safeguards your data in the cloud (microsoft.com)
Of course you can disagree but I have seen no evidence to suggest (main players at least) Cloud Storage is insecure. It is only as insecure as the person using it not bothering with the available security aspects because "its too much hassle".

I would not trust cheap cloud offerings from any Tom, Dick or Harry though - not so much for security of data, but more from integrity of data. What infrastructure backup/redundancy do they have? Who knows if such companies would go bust - what happens to the data then - sold on to dubious 3rd parties?

One thing is for sure, using onedrive, it is unlikely MS will go bust - if they do the world has huge problems! Of course, they could divest the onedrive business but I do not see that happening, as their cloud business (AZURE etc) is a major part of their income.

Give us an update on your free Icedrive account experience after you've used it for a few days: Cloud Storage Packages - Icedrive
Hmmm - £40 per year for 1 TB. MS Office 365 gives 1 TB for £60 per year and chucks in MS Office as well.

I would trust MS's systems for data integrity more than some lesser known offering. My dear old long departed Gran always used to say "if you buy cheap, you may end up paying dear".

Frankly, the terms here are not attractive enough for me (personally) to consider the Icedrive deals.

Also, £179 (current discounted price) for a lifetime licence for 1TB - 4.5 years of leasing?
I just do not believe lifetime licences are a viable long term business model for cloud storage, unless being heavily subsidised by other business streams.

I think the general basis for these types of statements always boils down to
    • The cloud is just somebody else's computer
    • If it's not just me handling it, I don't trust it.

Ditto! Unless the data is public or not sensitive, I want total control.
Leave OneDrive and others to some Russian, Chinese and North Korean hackers and see if they can get in.

    Just to "test" of course...

    - Requires two programs (portable and non-portable) for cloud management + mounting and sync.

    Overall, it's great!
