Problem trying to run programme as administrator

Hi. I have a programme that needs to run as administrator - Mailwasher Pro. (Otherwise, it freezes up and crashes for some reason)... I set the programme to run that way either by checking the relevant box in the Properties/Compatibility shortcut to the exe file or doing the same on the exe file itself (same difference?).

It's good for one run... but if I close down the programme and then look at the properties window, that check has been removed; so the exe is not now running as admin and the programme goes back to crashing whenever I open it. I have tried making the exe file read-only, but no change to this behaviour. The programme is running from within a Windows admin user account.

Any idea how to make sure that tit remains running as administrator, permanently? Why does Windows (x64 21H1) keep unchecking the box? Never seen this before - I have had this programme installed for many years without seeing this issue.

    Thanks

Hi, are you using the latest version?

    7.12.57

    Have you asked their support?

Not yet - do you think it's a problem with the exe file itself rather than Windows?

You can't run programs to start automatically as admin without using a scheduled task.. I don't know if that's an issue.

If you're running the current version (are you?) then I would certainly ask support as I presume this is a paid program.

    First question would be
"Why do I find I have to run this as admin and should that be necessary?"

They would give specific answers on an informed basis- perhaps few here use this. You might be lucky.

You can also examine your Reliability History for any crash record.

I don't get that ... I just check the 'run as administrator' box in the properties window. Stays put for all other programmes I run that way..

I just tried something - in the properties/compatibility tab, I have set the 'run as administrator' option for all users, not just for the account under which I always run it. The last two tries, the 'run as admin' setting (greyed out now I chose 'all users' option) has remained between sessions.

Early days, but I will post back as to whether this is indeed a fix or just a fluke...

I already asked for support some months back in respect of the programme crashing - I can't recall whether it was me who discovered or the developer who suggested that the programme be run as administrator. They offered no explanation for the crashes - they said that they haven't seen this issue with other people (yes, it is a payware programme: I have used it for many years without this issue, even in Windows 10 so no idea why things changed). But as the problem was solved by running as administrator, I didn't investigate further.

Only in the past couple of weeks has the 'run as admin' box started to show as unchecked every time I look in the properties window, so something else has changed. Same version of the Mailwasher programme - so maybe a Window update??

For now though it seems to be OK, with the change I made as above.. (No, for the current version I would have to buy the software again: I am using an older version which does everything I want - and is still supported by the developer).

    Thanks for the reply.

Then perhaps you may 'get' this:
Create Elevated Shortcut without UAC prompt in Windows 10

In addition, Windows will not allow elevated apps to run at startup by default.
    - though I don't think it's the issue you describe- I just thought I'd mention it in case it's relevant.

Ah... that's what I'd begun to suspect- hence my initial question as to the version.
