Windows 10 Photos App Has Color Problems

Since I got a new computer with Windows 10 I have noticed that when I view a jpeg file with the Photos app the colors are not correct. The image has a yellow/tan cast over it. This is especially noticeable if the image has a white background. I have googled Photos color problems and there appear to be a lot of issues but no rational solutions to fixing them (especially from Microsoft). However, I have uncovered a particular issue that I hope will lead someone to find a solution. If I open the Photos app by clicking on a file from Explorer I get an image with a yellow/tan cast over it. However, if I first open Photos and then select the file from within Photos I get the same image with the correct colors. Attached is a screenshot of my computer with two instances of the Photos app open. The app on the left was opened by clicking on the jpeg file in Explorer which caused Photos to be opened. The app on the right was opened from the Start menu and the jpeg file was opened within Photos. I have tried this with many different jpeg files and the results are the same. Can anyone explain this behavior?

Do you have a dedicated graphics card or an integrated one?
Nvidea has its own setting programme and all the functions can be altered to suite individual requirements.
Also in Settings>display,a fixed colour profile can be established,e.g. Adobe RGB
It appears from your description that individual programmes are allowed to use their own profile type.

I have an integrated video processor - Intel UHD Graphics 630. Are you suggesting that an app can use different video profiles depending on how it is invoked? Maybe. Where would these different profiles be defined? Have you tried this on your computer?

First/Next step might be to test it against another image viewing program - e.g. Irfanview (freeware)

You have two versions in two folders with identical saved names, and is simply a user error.

Using your methods both are the same for the JPGs I tried in Photos.

FWIW The effect is basically a change in colour temperature. Looks suspiciously like a 3000°K to 6500°K change, or the reverse.

    Helmut,

I agree it looks like a color temperature change. What made you think that I have two different versions in different folders? I never said that. I only have one copy of the file that is displayed in my post. I can also replicate the problem with any file in any directory on my computer. It appears that the Photos app is loading a different color profile depending on how it is invoked. Where would the color profiles be located?

I have opened files by using the "Open With" option in Explorer and selected the following programs to open the file:
    1. Photos
    2. Paint
    3. Paint 3D
    4. Photo Director
    5. Power PDF
    6. Snip & Sketch
    7. Windows Media Player
    8. Corel Paint Shop Pro

I have also imported the files into every Microsoft Office app.

The only time the color of files is distorted is when they are opened with Photos. If I select "Edit With Photos" from the Explorer menu the color of the image is fine. What is the difference between "Open with Photos" and "Edit with Photos?" A different profile?

Go to---control panel>color management ---and check through each tab.Adjust any setting to satisfy your specific needs.
    Settings>Display also permits changes.
There is no "maybe" involved. Each programme sets its own colour profile, your problem is the perfect example.
Yes,I have tried it on my pc,a long time ago.It is set to Adobe RGB 1988,via the venerable CS2.
Hardware, printers and monitors, also use their propriety setting.
The best profile is that which suits the indvidual, found by trial and error.

It may also occur after a driver update as per this comment I just found:

Every time your video card drivers update, the default colors are changed to your video card color settings. This causes the background color of Photo Viewer to change to yellow. ... Type color in the Windows search and click on Color Management. Check 'Use my settings
That said, I recommend trying Irfan View as the default for photos. Also much faster than MS Photos, with lots of plugins and extensions available to augment it functionally. Many keen image professionals avoid MS Photos and use alternatives.

    Gentlemen:
I appreciate your attempted help but so far I don't think anyone knows what they are talking about when it comes to my problem. There are a lot of suggestions (directions) to change color profiles on my computer. But does anyone REALLY know how to do this in Windows 10 for Photos?

    joeandmarg0:
Settings>Display does not permit any changes to a color profile of any kind on my computer. The only color profile that is listed is for my Samsung monitor and you cannot change the profile. There is no option to do anything with any software profiles.
Control Panel>Color Management (accessed via the search for "Color" as CMArbres suggested) also only allows changes to hardware device color profiles. I do not have a problem with my monitor. It displays the color differences from two instantiations of Photos at the same time on the same screen.

If someone knows how to change the color profile for a specific instantiation of Photos please provide a hint of how to do it.
Throwing out generalizations is just wasting your time.

I want to corroborate what the OP is saying, and that unfortunately, the suggestions here so far are missing the point. I could post my own screenshot but it just show exactly the same as the OP's first post. I'd like to add two things.

First is that it only affects certain systems, possibly older ones, I only experience this issue on the older PCs in our house (2nd gen Core i7s - ancient I know but they still work!) that both have Nvidia graphics one of which is no longer updated, the other is still supported. On my 9th gen Core i7 system (also with Nvidia), I don't have this issue. Same settings, same Microsoft account with settings and preferences synced.

Second, when switching to a new image in Photos, after showing the image for about one second, the picture quality changes. On the systems affected by the yellow-ish color bug, that's when the image becomes yellowish. On newer systems, the image sharpens up. I remember many versions back there was an option to auto-enhance photo display which had a similar effect but also changed the brightness and contrast (sometimes). I turned it off because I wanted to see my photos as they actually were without on the fly enhancement. Now that setting seems to be removed, but maybe a different version of it is actually baked-in and can't be disabled, and there is a bug or incompatibility with certain systems/chipsets.

That's my best guess. Luckily, as other people noted, there are loads of great 3rd party apps (I use Digikam to tag and organize my library) but it's pretty lame that the built in Photos app can't even open a jog file without messing up the white balance or color temperature. I guess for affected systems, the only solution is to use a different app.
