    replace Quicken?

I've used Quicken for years... more for simple accounting, in fact, I found it wanting to go online and advise me with investments and my shopping annoying

not working as well with win10, I looked for a slightly newer version (disc) to find, not only a lot of complaints but, the annual fee meaning I have to learn every year how to deal with a new crop of gimmicks

I have (had) a small business, I liked the basic bookkeeping, time saving drop lists, scheduled payment reminders, I don't want to share my accounting with the cloud...

    does anyone have a suggestion?
I've been reading reviews of accounting software...
should I just really learn to use EXCEL and set up my own bookkeeping?

and, what a pain... now I will need to keep the old computer running if win10 will make my older records inaccessible

Might want to look at Create more with Microsoft templates or Search Results - Office Templates for a spreadsheet for the register, could save you some time.

When Quicken decided to go to a subscription based service that was the last straw for me. I found a nice little free Excel template for check book management that I subsequently modified for tracking and reconciling my checking accounts, investments accounts, credit cards, and with a summary for net worth. I been using that system now for about 5 years and couldn’t be happier. Quicken still sends me emails advertising their latest and greatest software. I get a chuckle every time I see them pop up.

Microsoft Money was last on sale around 2005 but it still works fine in Windows 10/11. You can find the installation files for free.

    Hi there
    @CeriseR

Note the Cloud is really safe these days with a decent provider --Ms Azure for example has military grade security so I wouldn't diss the cloud these days -- your own machines are more likely to get hacked, or otherwise accessed by "3rd parties" than a decent cloud provider account is -- plus saves a lot in backup, tax details etc etc. If your own records get damaged / destroyed for example --fire, floods, all sorts of other issues currently in California so I'd seriously re-vist the cloud idea again.

depending on the nature of business, complexity of accounts, taxes etc you might find it OK to use a cloud service -- some of these are quite good for small businesses -- I believe SAGE has quite good cloud services -- if business is basically a "One Man" type of operation then learning EXCEL is a good bet too -- plenty of graphs, "What IF" scenarios and all sorts of goodies -- plenty of help also all over the web. EXCEL hasn't brushed away all competition "just by accident" --remember LOTUS 1-2-3 -- even the mighty IBM couldn't shift EXCEL from being top dog !!!

Sage Accounting and Business Management Software | Sage US

There's a GB version too for specific GB issues (e.g VAT, import duty, Brexit issues )

Sage UK - Software & Solutions for Every Business

(Mind you "The people's republic of California" probably has a more complex tax regime than China, Iran and N.Korea all combined these days !!!! especially with all that environmental stuff).

    Cheers

    Quicken

I use Quicken starter 2017 which is the last Quicken that isn’t a subscription. It works fine with the latest Win 10. The only problem is the update offers which I ignore.

The only issue some of my clients had with the Starter editions is they literally had to be started from scratch, couldn't import from previous data.

I've never had any trouble importing existing Quicken files from earlier editions. I've been using Quicken since 1993 and probably 3 or 4 updates and it's always worked. I don't use the on-line features and that is what they normally stop supporting.
I think the last update took me from Quicken 2010 to 2017 which I'm still on. I would change to something else but over 28 years of data would probably be lost.

can you tell me what template you use?
I agree about Quicken... it was a delight when it was a simple "register" I imagine all the reminders and things I used in Quicken that now no longer work as well while it tries to drag me into features I don't want or need...
reminders for out DWP set up for alternate months pop up weekly, entries for payments bring up "is this your scheduled The Gas Company payment" clearly not...

last two versions purchased, had to fight with it to not download my accounts from my banks, override my entries and notes...
how do you catch possible banking errors when they over ride your own entries?

agree, I was done with quicken at my last update (every so many years)
funny, like ThePrintShop, a great program in, was it, 2006?
downward spiral to one of the lowest rated little publishers and, seeming, no response to increasingly bad reviews

nice thing about using excel, I'd be free of all future dumb gimmicks by what ever product I might choose next

fire and flood, CA is a big state though, not all regions suffer the same issues... riots could be a problem locally

our gov his newsomness is concerned about the loss not of property to crime, but of our loss of "confidence"
cities burning, violent street gangs, drug cartels, organized theft rings, every kind of crime doubled in the past two years,
large chain stores closing with the small business wiped out of business by regulation, taxation and quarantine
streets filled with illegal dumping, increase in rat flea diseases...

no problem for wealthy elitist libertainment industry and wealthy elitist politicos
and, californian's keep drinking the purple Kool-Aid advertised by liberal media...

but, I still don't trust the cloud
apple, microsoft, have no respect for my privacy
I just set up a new computer with win 10, Microsoft sees no reason it should not share everything gulag (google) has harvested and, for every option I chose to not share, they did it anyway

    it's creepy!
China knowing being able to tell chase that my conservativeness is destroying their "rep" is becoming a reality as the insanity increases

I lost business and some "friends" some years ago when at&t decided to "share" the subject lines of our email messages with people in our contacts. One woman I know was humiliated when the true status of a relationship was exposed, I had problems with a subject line that someone had sent to me and I replied with a disagreement of the statement but, the "friends" and business associates didn't ask or realize I hadn't generated the subject or approved

I should have sued at&t, but I didn't find out about it until a year later
