    Weather app gone missing

Hi, my work performed a migration last week and I have now noticed the weather icon has gone from start menu and if I click on it nothing happens. If I Hoover over the icon it comes p~Microsoft.bingweather_8wkey….

Also searched in search bar and app settings, and appears weather has been removed/uninstalled as it’s not showing. Other users have the weather app but haven’t migrated yet. I still have the weather in the taskbar.

It also appears that Microsoft store and other pre-installed apps such as photos etc were installed on the migration date as well. So my initial thoughts are this migration has uninstalled the app. Is there anyway to check when this was app uninstalled?

I am unable to search for apps in Microsoft store since I believe work must restrict what apps are put onto the store . Therefore, how do I get the weather app reinstalled? I read that powershell commands may be required.

    Thanks

I have attached two batch scripts, one for resetting an app and for re-registering an app, hopefully one will help you resolve the problem.

Thanks. I am just looking for the weather app to be reinstalled as the app is not present on the machine so can’t reset it.

So I don’t need Microsoft store to download/install the apps?

Lastly, does the screenshot attached with the name ie “p~Microsoft.bingweather” suggest that the programme has been uninstalled then? Or something else?

As even when I right click it I can turn live tile on and off but doesn’t impact the app. When pressing the app it doesn’t work.

You can use the Reinstall_and_Re-register_Apps.bat script to register weather app.

Ok. But would this tile still show the name as the attached screenshot even though the under apps it’s uninstalled? I am just trying to figure out why this name appears if uninstalled.

Hi Shawn, on my work pc I have recently noticed the start menu tile icon for weather is showing a blank tile and when hoovered displays “p~Microsoft.bingweather_8wkeyb3d….”. When I click the icon nothing happens. It Only appears to be this app. This appears to have happened since my company done a migration last week and only last week and the issue may have been therefore since migration but didn’t notice.

When I search or go to apps under settings, it appears the weather app is not there anymore. Other apps from the Microsoft store and store itself were last updated on the day I performed the migration. So could be due to this migration. I spoke to other colleagues who haven’t performed the migration and their weather app works fine. Going to see if this issue occurs to hem when they perform migration as well. No further updates were performed but the pc did crash couple days ago and this is when I noticed it but seems odd that this would cause the weather app to be uninstalled.

Why would the app show the above message when hoovered over the icon? Does that mean it is uninstalled? and also given it’s not under apps or search bar either.

In Microsoft store because it is a work account I can’t find any apps apart from the ones they put on as a company. And there is no weather app.

I have asked the IT department to investigate but would like your thoughts on the matter.

Should I check via power shell:
    1. If the app is installed or not? I did come across that weather app is saved under the appdata/local/packages folder. But this was all installed at the last windows major update version 1909.
    2. Attempt to uninstall to make sure it’s uninstalled? Or just reinstall? It just a reinstall what powershell can be used since cannot access store to download.

    Thanks

    Danny
    Hello Danny,

It looks like the Weather app is broken with its tile looking like that on the Start menu.

You could try reinstalling and re-registering the Weather app using the command in option 2 below for it.

Hi Shawn, So by broken you mean this is why it it is not showing as installed under apps? I thought if the app was uninstalled it wouldn’t show anything on the icon? Or is this expected behaviour when an app that’s uninstalled?

Also thanks for the advice but I am not actually clear wha to enter in the code in the command prompt? Just copy and paste the full line you posted?

If the app was uninstalled, it would normally not show on the Start menu.

If the app is broken from whatever, it could should like that on the Start menu. Sometimes reregistering and reinstalling will fix it.

So the app is not showing on the start menu or under search/apps. Other users have this app but who haven’t performed the in house migration.

Maybe the tile is broken because it was uninstalled (for some unknown reason) and is looking for the app that’s not there? Therefore it is just showing the package name. I was expecting that it since the app was uninstalled that the app would disappear? but these apps are put there by group policy so I wonder if this the reason it still showing on start menu.

When I refer to start menu I mean the icons on the right hand side when you press the windows start button and have been pinned there by group policy.

Would windows cumulative updates etc reinstall the weather app or not? I could always wait for a new update and wait for the app to be reinstalled but I don’t know how these updates work. Or it’s got to be a new version of windows? For example we are on version 1903, would this be fixed at next version update that the company rolls out ie 20H2.
