    Best Software Updater?

    Hi,

I will pretty soon install Windows 10 Pro from scratch on my new workstation, and I'm trying to figure out what is the best Software Updater. By Software Updater I mean a software that automatically updates my applications when a new version becomes available.

    The ideal candidate would:
_ be free (preferably but not mandatory)
_ have the option to schedule computer scans to spot which app do need an update
_ be security focus: eg only retrieving updates from the official editor website, check digital signature ...

So far I installed Ninite and Patch my PC.
Ninite - Install or Update Multiple Apps at Once
Patch My PC: Simplify Third-Party Patching in Microsoft SCCM and Intune

Both do a great job but are not ideal: Ninite doesn't support a lot of applications and can't run on a scheduled basis but on the other hand it is very secure (it retrieves updates from official editor websites and checks for digital signatures), whereas Patch my PC supports 300+ apps, and has a scheduler option, but I have the feeling it is less secure as I'm not sure where it retrieves the updates from.

Thank you in advance for your insight on that matter!

You could try Sumo (free; Pro has more options).

I note you refer to automatically updating them. I have found that if I install a program into a non-default location, sometimes simply letting it automatically update does not respect that. Depends on how the author has written the installer.

Personally I would scan and review, then decide, and update manually. I do that very infrequently.

Do you want to keep giveaway licenses (assuming you have any?) Never update automatically!

Hello, if your software has a check for updates option, use that. Or manually check from time to time.

That is what I do. I find automatic updates can cause more issues than they are worth at times.

I have actually found that automatic is not the best way to go - for me at least,

If there is a new release of any of the software I use I do not want to update the software until I have checked it out fully, made sure that the update gives me something that I need and has no downsides that I cannot accept.

I am using a fair proportion of complex Pro level software so I would not expect general issues or incompatible new features but it can happen.

There are also cases where a particular function I use a lot is changed, even if I'm happy with every other function I will check out the way the new function works ( off line) and only when happy will I make the switch.

As I often work to a deadline I need to eliminate any potential delays to the task

Second that. Many of my programs tell me if there's an update available when I launch them. If they don't, they always offer a way to check for updates, and I do every once in a while.

It's a method that works, and there are no security issues (like updates from unofficial sources) to worry about.

    Hi guys,

    Thanks everyone for detailed answers.
I installed and ran the free version of SUMo: it detected a lot more applications than Ninite and Patch my PC, that's a good point.
Then I tried to update few apps, but first I went into the settings and ticked "Get Update > Developper website" instead of "SUMo server". But I got a prompt saying I need to purchase the Pro version to do thatd. So as I planned to use this software pretty frequently to stay up to date and maintain a secured PC, I bought the Pro version, which is not super expensive but I had to pay AUD53 for that nonetheless. And then, back in the software, I activate the Pro license and click the "Get Update from the developper site" and instead of silently download and install the update from the developper site like I was expecting, SUMo opens a tab in my browser, landing me to the developper site ... wait, I could do that by myself, just by running the app, then go to settings and click on "Check for updates", I don't need to pay AUD50 for that! I feel like I've been paying only for an interface that gathers all the apps on my computer with a color in front of it so that I know if an update exists for it or not, this is cool already, but far from enough, and definitely not what I was expecting!
It is so time consuming having to go to each and every developer website, click on the download button, find the exe file, execute it, delete the exe file and doing this all over again for all the applications that need an update on my computer, I won't even do it!
I know the only person to blame here is probably me as I must have been reading what you said guys too quickly to understand that SUMo Pro does NOT update anything automatically but, anyway, yeah, I'm pissed of to be honest. What's the point of the Pro version then?

Well, on their site, the Pro version claims
    Automatic self-update (PRO only)
Direct access to software developer's web site (PRO only)
    https://www.kcsoftwares.com/?sumo

    Sumo has a forum:
KC Softwares Forums - Index page
    and contacts:
    KC Softwares

which might give you more informed advice.

I have no experience with the Pro version- as I commented, I prefer to scan and consider any updates found - and that very rarely- more out of curiosity.

    Thanks @dalchina,

Exact: the Pro version claims "automatic self-update" but that's not the case.
So I will contact them and ask for a deactivation of my license + a refund.
