Unsolicited WinZip v26.0 trial over-riding previous noupdate setting

I have recently noticed that my paid-for WinZip 19.5 'Pro' (Win 10) has been replaced by an unsolicited trial version of Winzip v26.0

Also, after resetting the registry noupdating entry myself from 0 to 1, to prevent updating of WinZip 19.5, this has been over-ridden - see screenshots:

If anyone knows how to prevent the unsolicited updating of WinZip v19.5, which functions satisfactorily under Windows 10 Pro, then I would be pleased to hear more.

    Dave,

I have WinZip 18.5 Pro [paid for version] so not quite the same as yours.

I have Do not check for updates set in
    WinZip,
    Settings menu,
    WinZip options,
    Miscellaneous
and no update checks take place.

    My
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Nico Mak Computing\WinZip\UpdateCheck
    NoUpdateChecking
    entry has the Data
    0
which is the opposite of what you have now set yours to.

Of course, this might differ between versions but I doubt it. You might want to check as it appears that you have now allowed checking for updates.

As for the trial version you now have running, that might well have been installed as part of a bundle within some other utility.
    - Even if I deliberately run the WinZip Check for update now facility, nothing gets installed automatically.
    - It shows me a dialog and its button takes me to their website where I am regaled with fairy stories about how wonderful the new version is and do I want to buy it. Even then nothing gets installed automatically.
Comparing the Modified date-time of your C:\Program Files\WinZip folder to that of others might help you find out what else was installed/updated at the same date-time and might therefore be the culprit

    All the best,

Denis - many thanks for the message/suggestions.

The WinZip v26.0 installation last night was immediately preceded by adxregistrator.log [+] in C:\Users\Default\Documents\Add-in Express, which appears to be an Office 2016 add-in 'winzip express for office' (I do not recall adding it myself). So for Word 2016 there is a menu option File : 'Zip and Share (WinZip Express)'

Update/s: I have uninstalled 'WinZip Express' in Office 2016 - it was evident for both Word and Excel and had to be removed as an add-in for each.

Anyway I have uninstalled WinZip v26 trial, reinstalled v19.5, and set via menu WinZip Options > Settings > Updates to 'Do not check for updates'

Checking afterwards, registry HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Nico Mak Computing\WinZip\UpdateCheck shows

    NoUpdateChecking = 0

However this is not consistent with 'How do I completely disable "Check for Updates"? – WinZip - Knowledgebase':

"The Check for Updates feature can be disabled by changing the registry string value NoUpdateChecking from 0 to 1 in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Nico Mak Computing\WinZip\UpdateCheck

But I shall leave NoUpdateChecking = 0 and see what happens over the next day or so.

    Dave,

You do know that you are not using
    C:\Users\Default
    don't you?
This folder is only used in the process of creating new users.

I have now done the job properly

    Dave,

    I found the article
How do I completely disable Check for Updates - WinZip Knowledgebase

It puzzled me so I conducted some Registry checks of my own. Here are my results:-

    1 AutoCheck weekly
Unsolicited WinZip v26.0 trial over-riding previous noupdate setting-autocheck-weekly.png
    AskFirst 0
    AutoMode 1
    CurrentPeriod [also Period] 7

    2 AutoCheck daily
Unsolicited WinZip v26.0 trial over-riding previous noupdate setting-autocheck-daily.png
    AskFirst 0
    AutoMode 1
    CurrentPeriod [also Period] 1

    3 Ask before checking
Unsolicited WinZip v26.0 trial over-riding previous noupdate setting-ask-before-checking.png
    AskFirst 1
    AutoMode 1
    CurrentPeriod [also Period] 1 or 7 {reflecting whatever happened to be the last setting used}

    4 Do not check
Unsolicited WinZip v26.0 trial over-riding previous noupdate setting-do-not-check.png
    AskFirst 0
    AutoMode 0
    CurrentPeriod [also Period] 1 or 7 {reflecting whatever happened to be the last setting used}

    5 NoUpdateChecking {Registry entry}
Unsolicited WinZip v26.0 trial over-riding previous noupdate setting-noupdatechecking.png
The entire Check for updates block of WinZip Options disappears and this, to me, illustrates its intended effect.
    - I have left mine in this condition so I can post back if I ever see any update checks taking place.

I also played around with the other settings before using NoUpdateChecking. The other settings are reversible so the changes shown in my diagrams 1-4 [only] could equally well have been achieved by changing the relevant Registry entries as by using WinZip options.
    - This reversibility is not true for all Windows Registry entries so I deliberately worked through to check they worked in this case.

    All the best,
    Denis

Denis - many thanks for that.

For comparison, I have appended the 'no update' details for WinZip v19.5, which are not consistent with your version, nor with the knowledgebase article.

    Dave,

Your UI looks to me to be operating in the same way as mine.
    - Your diagram corresponds to my diagram 4.
    - The Registry entry NoUpdateChecking only changes if you manually edit the Registry entry - it is not controlled by the UI.

The 'Do not check for updates' setting made in your UI controls the Registry entry AutoMode not the NoUpdateChecking entry.
The NoUpdateChecking, if set to 1, turns off the Update settings in the UI.

I expect that, if you manually set NoUpdateChecking to 1, your Settings, Updates tab will be cleared of many or all of its contents.

FYI WinZip 19.5 has been automatically replaced this morning by WinZip v26.0 [+] and contrary to the original 'noupdate' preference. The previous registration data (for v19.5) is not accepted, see screenshot.

I don't there is anything else to say other than to regard the process of replacing a paid-for functioning version having no obvious time limit, with a time-limited trial version, as sharp practice.

    Dave,

    Mine [v18.5] is still intact.

    I don't know what
    adxregistrator.exe
is. I don't have it in my C:\Program Files\WinZip folder.

Did you re-try the NoUpdateChecking [=1] Registry item?

That's the state mine is in.
