As I said, all the extensions I have tried (.txt, .jpg, .png, .zip, ...) manifest the same delay. That makes me suspect that the problem goes beyond .txt files.

Is there another way to revert the \FileExts\ tree besides importing one from another little changed computer or deleting the key first then importing?

Yes, you have a good point.

Not sure of the answer to your second question. Another thought then is to take the bad tree and put it into the working test account (or maybe create another test account if you like) and see if the problem follows if you don't want to experiment in your main account until you narrow the problem down more.

… Since I have an export of the FileExts key ...
I hope you selected .reg format for the export.
    - Only the .reg format can later be used to restore a key to its previous condition
    - The .txt export format is useless.

I have seen nothing to suggest that this Registry key is responsible for your problem.

    Hi,
I logged in as a different user. For that user local files open quickly and the open with explorer menu comes up right away instead of being delayed for 10 seconds.
the open with explorer menu comes up right away
Considering the problem user, is the whole rt click menu slow to open, or only 'Open With'?

When logged in as the problem user, perform a clean boot (Google or see tenforums tutorial).
Do you then still see the same delay?

And basics: Have you run some disk checks?
    a. Download and use Hard Disk Sentinel (trial, portable or installed version - excellent- includes SSDs). Check the tab for each disk. Green is good.
    b. If ok, from an admin command prompt run
    chkdsk c: /scan
    - change the drive letter if your files are on a different partition.

I transplanted the questionable \FileExts\ registry key to the working test1 profile and the slow open, openwith menu problem did not follow that key, so the problem is elsewhere.

I performed a clean boot on the problem account and the slow opening and openwith problem persists.

So non-microsoft services or startups are not the cause. The disk is not the cause. Something in the profile is triggering the problem. New profiles do not exhibit the problem. Disabling the ethernet stops the problem. It manifests both in opening various file types from explorer and hovering over the exlorer "open with" menu.

No user or system environment variable point to the network.

I also tried disabling all "windows explorer" related items in autoruns64 and that did not help.
Safe mode with networking does cure the problem.

    webdove,
    Thanks for the update.

Maybe this can be of use:
    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sys...nloads/procmon

start logging right before you try and open a file, then stop logging right after it opens and then analyze the log.

Comparing results with network enabled/disabled could be insightful too, so you might what to do the faster network disabled case first or try from your clean profile.

That result indicates that you should be able to identify the culprit using Clean boot procedures
Perform a Clean Boot to Troubleshoot Software Conflicts - TenForumsTutorials
    - The culprit is not Windows itself
    - I have not previously seen a case of Safe mode working correctly and other user accounts working correctly with a single account going wrong. If your faulty user account has third-party apps installed [that are not installed in other user accounts] then suspect them first.

    Best of luck,

a couple of weeks back I had cleared some numeric IP address credentials while chasing another problem. This included 192.168.0.7. Apparently one of these type of registry entries was triggering failed attempts to connect using that IP address.
Slow local file open, registry ...\explorer\fileexts corrupted?-image.png
Once I added the correct credentials for 192.168.0.7 the problem went away.

It surprises me that there were no events in the system log to point out the lack of correct credentials.
