Cannot open links in MS Works

I installed MS Works 9 and it appears to work. But clicking on a hypertext link in a document does not open the link it. The cursor changes to a hand when hovering over a link, but clicking on the link just turns on the "Underline" function. Using CTRL +Click does not work either. And I don't see any settings to enable this.

I've used MS Works 7 on Windows 7 and clicking on links has always worked. I don't see any settings for that version either but clicking on links has always worked.

Any suggestions on how to enable this function in MS Works 9 would be appreciated.
    Thanks

See the same with Word 2003.
But rightclicking>select hyperlink>copy>pasting in browser works for me.
Also, after printing to pdf the hyperlink functions in the pdf document.

I'm not sure what you mean by See the same with Word 2003. I don't have Word 2003.
I can copy/paste the link into a browser & that works.

What I find strange is that when the cursor hovers over the link, a small message comes up saying "CTRL +click to follow link https......" IOW the system knows it's a link. But it just doesn't work.

I assume it is a safety feature. The error message i get gives some explanation. Searching with this text, you will find similar questions and maybe solutions. Since I consider it a minor issue, I will not try possible solutions in the form of suggested registry modifications.

Is the program simply Works or is it Works Suite? The difference is the word processor portion in Works Suite was replaced by a version of Word and what happens in the Office Word can be same as in Works Suite. I have Works 9 which was discontinued some years ago, still works okay in Win10 x64, actually so does Office 2000 for usual needs but I don't install Outlook, just needs the Compatibility Pack to use files from Office 2007 and later.

The program in question is just Microsoft Works version 9.0. It is not a Suite.

I do have Works Suite 2003 on a Windows 7 PC. That has Word 2002 as the default word processor, but also has WksWP.exe as an included file which is Works 7.0 which I've been using on Win7.

I downloaded Works 9.0 some time ago from a website that was suggested by some people on the Microsoft support forum, so I figured it had to be a somewhat reliable download. I just installed it the other day & it appears to work OK. But it won't open links in a document when clicked on using either Firefox 92.0 & Edge.

The threads about Works 9.0 on the MS support forum are all 3-4 years old & locked, so I can't ask those people any questions. I did start a new thread but so far no helpful responses.

Since you have Works 9 working on Win10 x64, do you recall ever clicking on links in documents & having them work or not?

The timing when Works was discontinued fits the 3-4 years mentioned but No, I don't recall using the links in it. My interest is because of clients having recipes they created in Works but need them working in a newer program which can handle the format, frequently is done using the free LibreOffice.

    Thanks for reply.

I tried using Works 9 to save in the .doc and .docx format. But when I open these documents up the title's filename has the .wps extension. Apparently it won't actually let you edit or modify a .doc file. Even if I create a .docx document using Wordpad, when opening in Works9 it comes up as a .wps file. I can cut/paste into a browser if needed.

Obviously it's time to move away from .wps. Either I'll use Works and save in the .docx format or use Wordpad which saves in the .docx format. I do like the Works easy to use database which I'll keep using. I had to use Access in MS Office a few years ago & it's way to heavy duty for home use.

    Thanks again.

You're welcome. And I agree that sometimes programs go beyond what an average user needs. I haven't checked lately if the included WordPad can open .wps files, it's a pretty 'lite' version of Word.

I tried & WordPad will not open .wps files.
