Adobe Photoshop & Windows 10 problem

Hi. I have an old version of Photoshop, but it opens and works fine in Windows 10 (21H1) if I use the compatibility mode. However, I can only open files in PS if I open up the programme and do so from the file menu there. If I right-click a file (jpeg) say, and select 'Open with'... Photoshop, the compatibility setting doesn't seem to be recognised and PS opens but crashes with the same message ("hardware/system error...") as it does if I try to open the programme directly from its exe file without setting the needed compatibility checkbox.

Any idea, since PS works fine in itself, how I can open the programme up from the image file? Last time I used PS, I had no issue with this at all - a Windows update must have nobbled things (I can't think of any other reason).

Thanks. This is Photoshop 6.0 - 20 years old. I can't see that there is a GPU acceleration option.

Ancient though it is, it does just what I want, and as I say, I have been using it with no problems in Windows 10 x64 for some years. Can't think why I cannot get files to open apart from within an already running PS all of a sudden. Apart from possibly a Windows update, the only change I made is updating my GPU driver..

OK, just done that: I am afraid it made no difference, I get the same hardware/system error ('unrecoverable').

Thanks, but I think to be honest, since using Photoshop is a very small part indeed of what I use the PC in question for (more for gaming, X-Plane to be specific), changing the graphics driver is not something I want to do. Even if that worked, it wouldn't be worth the change as I get better results from the up-to-date driver I already have installed. Hope I don't appear 'unco-operative!

That said, I am about to upgrade the PC.. new CPU/MB/RAM, possibly GPU, so better I wait and see what happens after that.

Yes, that is true. I am having the rebuild done by a local PC shop though (I don't trust myself with such an important upgrade these days) - they will take care of all that for me (I am assuming!).
