Yes, I have tried that too. Same error.. Thank you for the thought.
Yep, 21 year old app. I'm surprised you can even run it on Windows 10. Not surprised you're having issues with it now.
Anyway, "if" (it's been 20 years since I touched it, using the subscription version now) it has an option for GPU acceleration, try disabling it. Outside of that I've no other suggestions other than to upgrade; but if your still trying to use a 21 year old app, I'm guessing you don't wish to upgrade.
That's not going to do anything for a 21 year old Photoshop app. The bottom line is the app is too old for modern operating systems, and too old to take advantage of modern hardware. And I'm sure you found out Adobe has ceased support years ago.
Good luck.
Thanks, but the bottom line is not that "the app is too old": as I said, I have used this version of Photoshop on the same PC with the same O/S with no issues at all for a long time now. I was wondering why one particular aspect of it (opening a graphics file to PS via the context menu) might have stopped working. I can only load files via the PS menu when the programme is already open. Not tragic, but can be inconvenient. Perhaps the new GPU driver (I haven't changed anything else AFAIK), though it seems unlikely that that would cause this issue.
No way am I 'upgrading' to a version where I have to buy a license every year at no inconsiderable expense - given that I use PS only occasionally.
The other point(s) you raise were covered in earlier posts on this thread. I guess you didn't have the time to read them. No worries.
I simply replied to your post and pointed out a fact... the app is 21 years old.
Sorry for trying to help. And no worries about me replying to any more of your posts.
Wow, you take offense easily, don't you - I was perfectly polite in my reply to you, if not grateful, and thanked you..I simply replied to your post and pointed out a fact... the app is 21 years old. Sorry for trying to help. And no worries about me replying to any more of your posts.
I know the application is 21 years old, that information does not come as news to me, funnily enough; and it is clear even from my original question (and which you can't have read properly before replying) that that is not the cause of this issue.
Who you reply to is always entirely your decision. I can live with it, if that's unfortunately how you feel.

Thanks
I was intrigued, and thought I'd have a look (there are others reporting your predicament, don't recall which vn of W10 they were on). Before I report my 'findings', I have to admit I am only on 20H2 - which may explain any differences, and may not. I don't have PS, and have never used it, so downloaded and installed the still-available 'trial' version (6.0.128.0) from a source I won't identify here unless asked - although Adobe are hardly giving anything away, or losing revenue, as it disables all file saving.
But it installed and runs fine, including double-clicking on file types I have associated with it via the W10 dialogue. I have not defined any compatibility mode settings. As it is only 60MB installed (may be stuff in other folders apart from PF86), I shall leave it in until I get to 21H1, and let you know the result. There is no obvious reason why it shouldn't work, unless it 'pokes' the graphics hardware in some special way. I am constantly impressed with the way old Windows programs keep working on later versions of the OS (rare compliment to MS there).
If it does blow up on 21H1, then I will investigate as far as I can. Meanwhile, its back to IrfanView for me - I have never liked Adobe products, but am forced to use ADE to access library ebooks. I would say hang in there! atb, Martin
Hi there
G'morning @martinlest
For photoshop :
Try getting an iso from here -- not sure what release you have but there must be an appropriate version of PS here for you -- your keys should work. Re-install should fix problem. I believe you can even if a really old release is good enough for you get CS2 with a Generic key as it's I think now "Abandonware".
Internet Archive Search: photoshop
Note though the GIMP (works on Windows too) is a great FREE competitor for photoshop - should run on all releases of Windows. Has layering etc and all sorts that should satisfy even quite serious photographers etc.
GIMP - Downloads
PS still works perfectly for me even in W11 on an old laptop that really shouldn't be running W11 at all !!! - On CS6 of photoshop
Cheers
