    Adobe Flash Alternative ?

Ok, Since the demise of Adobe Flash Player. I cannot get the sound to work, on a genealogy chatroom site that I use......is there a reliable alternative that will actually work ?........I have no other sound issues at all, and have contacted the site in question, Rootschat, who say there is no problem at their end.......any help appreciated.......

I had a quick look at Rootschat and don't see anywhere that has any sounds. Can you give a link to the specific page you have trouble with?

I see. I hadn't spotted that they had a chatroom. I'm not registered, so wouldn't be able to use any link you sent. I'm currently reading through the RootsChat FAQ for clues.....

Here is proof that sound is activated........

It's definately happened since the demise of Adobe Flash.....I have only just got around to addressing the problem......most members have the sound turned OFF, as it can be annoying, but I tend to use the chatroom in the early hours, and then promptly doze off, if someone enters the room it should make a sound to alert you....

You may well be right. From browsing the site's help pages I get the impression it is not very up to date and may well still be using Flash (despite what their admins are telling you). One way to check that would be to try it with a browser that still has Flash installed.

Now there are many problems with that approach.

First, Microsoft has removed Flash from all their browsers through Windows update, so you'd have to use a 3rd-party browser.

The second problem is that all 3rd-part browsers have removed all support for using the Flash plugin in their latest versions, so you'd have to use an old version. The last version of Firefox that had Flash support was 84.0.1. You can get the Portable Apps version of FF 84.01 here:

    PortableApps.com - Browse /Mozilla Firefox, Portable Ed./Mozilla Firefox, Portable Edition 84.0.1 at SourceForge.net

NB: do NOT let FF 84.0.1 download the update to the latest version or you'll loose the ability to use Flash.

Finally, you need to get hold of the Flash plugin (NPSWF*.dll) and that's not easy to find (at least, not from any download source I'd trust). I've managed to track down a collection of Flash installers in the Internet Archive Wayback Machine. They seem to be safe (check them with your AV). The most recent is for 32.0.0.387. Look for fp_32.0.0.387_archive.zip at the bottom of the list of .ZIP files.

Adobe Flash Player : Adobe Inc. : Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming : Internet Archive

This contains offline Flash installers for all OS (Mac, Linux, Windows, etc.). Run the flashplayer32_0r0_387_win.exe one. This will install Flash and place NPSWF64_32_0_0_387.dll in C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash. Take a copy of this file.

With the .dll you can add the plugin to Firefox portable....

    Enable Flash in Firefox Portable

There's a slight path difference from the instructions above which were written in 2008. In \FirefoxPortable\App\Firefox64 create a plugins folder and copy the .dll into it. You will then have a browser with the Flash plugin.

NB: Do NOT use this browser for any other sites apart from your chatroom. Not only is Flash unsafe, but this old version of Firefox will be missing many security fixes. Do not uninstall Flash else the .dll will not be registered. If a Windows update subsequently uninstalls Flash then you may need to reinstall it.

Or if you think that's too much like hard work, you could just put up with no sound....
