Transfering home created movie to external hard drive

I have several home created dvd's which i would like to transfer to usb external hard drive for easy plug an play.
Have checked on internet but some are a bit fiddly to use.

I have noticed on dvd that there is VOB.ts file which when i click on it plays straight away...do i transfer this file only to external hard drive and when i click on will it play straight away ?

Any simple dvd ripping program ?

    Thank you

    Hi,
You do not need any ripping program.

First, a typical DVD folder cannot include "VOB.ts" files. Perhaps you've created something like DVDs, not real ones. If so, you may just transfer those files/folders to an external drive as they are.

If you've created real DVDs, you have to transfer only "VIDEO_TS" folder in which ".VOB" files are included.
Using a player like VLC you may drag and drop that folder on player or open that folder and open/run "VIDEO_TS.IFO" file and see the whole DVD.

Opening .VOB files, you have to open/run each of these files individually with interruptions.

    Here's a typical DVD structure:

    ...opening VIDEO_TS folder:

PS: AUDIO_TS folder is empty and useless. No need to transfer it.

Dvd movie transfer to external hard drive

    Thanks for replies,

The information you provided was helpful.

I use Freemake for video conversion but rarely use other options and checked out the DVD option -put a dvd in pc and Freemake listed
Audio_TS and Video_ TS folder so i converted Video _TS to mp4 ....after completion....opened the converted mp4 in Potplayer which i use now and transferred the mp4 file to usb external hard drive and clicked on it and Potplayer played with no issues.

Have tried VLC player but i find it a fiddly to use ... i have a test pc i use for trying programs out. I will try VLC player again and play around with it more thoroughly and do comparison with Potplayer and see how things go.

    Thank you

    You're welcome!
There's no need to convert anything. Almost all video players can play a DVD if you drag and drop its folder on them. Conversions bring losses.

I was going to let this one go, but I just can't.

Ripping is not converting. Old favourites like DVDDecrypter and DVD Shrink both do a hell of a job ripping DVD to DVD format (even though neither of which have been updated for many years). IFO/VOB/BUP on a DVD >> IFO/VOB/BUP on a computer drive is lossless, they're the same files. Ripping software is just a convenient way of an ordered transfer of content from one medium to another.

Transcoding (i.e. not conversion), on the other hand, whilst it may result in some loss of quality, to what extent depends on the users experience with the software used, and the settings. Off-the-shelf boxed conversion programs allow minimal settings control by the user and consequently may result in loss of quality - often visibly, whereas more controllable software like command-line ffmpeg (free) will allow the user to determine settings that minimise quality loss to the extent it will be negligible. H.264 and H.265 (lossy codecs) video formats are examples. For h264 and h265 format, there will be loss of quality because of compression, but it more than likely will not even be visible to the naked eye with the right settings.

Simple "conversion" of video files with programs like Vidcoder or Handbrake (both freeware) also allow some degree of user control settings, but not to the greater extent than might satisfy the purists.

"Conversions bring losses" needs to be defined a bit better than a generalised sweeping statement.
