What is a good windows data recovery software ?

My external HDD is corrupted .
I tried to check the contents in it with an Ubuntu live cd but the external HDD is showing empty . I think i lost a terrabyte of documents , software and photos

Are there any good software i can try to recover data from that HDD .

I have used disk drill on it before but it was only able to recover 4gb of data from it . i don't know why its not recovering the rest of the data .

    Thanks

Well, you said it's corrupted. Could be mechanical damage or other types of failure. You would only know more if it were professionally examined and the platters dismounted if need be. £££££££s

To determine its state, out of curiosity only I think, try Hard Disk Sentinel (excellent) - not data recovery.

There's Testdisk - use with great caution.

It sounds like more basic programs such as Recuva won't help you.

    Not free:
Active@ File Recovery - LSoft Technologies
Data Recovery Software to Recover Lost or Deleted Data & amp Files

Presumably you will now ensure you have backups...

Thanks for the reply dalchina , SoFine409 .

I am already running a recovery software on my external HDD now .

I have 425 gb of documents to recover , so far the software i am running says it have already recovered 49.73 gb of the documents. It is showing previews of it ... and is still running ... i am not sure if it can recover all the 425 gb of documents in it .

The rest were iso images and few vmware images which i cant see anything of it in the recovery softwares preview options .

I am going to run it till midnight today and let me see if it can recover all those 425 gb of documents and photos .

    Thanks

Warning .... Just hang off the euphoria and celebrations until you can check that the files are actually readable and useable.

I'd be doing the "recovery" in bits and pieces just to make sure it's not wasting your time with false hope.
