    I don't keep up with latest Open-Shell updates and am still on 4.4.141. It works well with 19043.1165, 19044.1200 and Windows 11, although it can't kill the 11 Start icon (I shifted Windows Start to the left and blew up my Open-Shell Start Button to hide it).

    I have no idea why I was apparently one of the few who had to do this, but I finally got it working by doing everything suggested here.

    I had never used Revo Uninstaller and had the idea that these "cleaner' things can maybe do more harm than good, so was reluctant to go in that direction.

    That being the case, I:

    • Restored the computer to a pre-August update state
    • Did a normal uninstall of Open Shell
    • Rebooted
    • Allowed the August updates to install
    • Re-installed Open Shell

    This resulted in the same symptoms (menu briefly flashing when clicking start button).

    So I hesitantly:

    • Restored computer to pre-August update state
    • Downloaded and installed Revo Uninstaller
    • Used Revo Uninstaller to uninstall Open Shell nervously selecting the most aggressive cleanup options
    • Rebooted
    • Allowed August updates to install
    • Re-installed Open Shell

    To my surprise, it worked!

    Thanks to those who emphasized the need to uninstall and re-install and those who said to use Revo Uninstaller when uninstalling.

    Hello @Bob Coleman,

    Just as a follow up. Revo Uninstaller has been my preferred uninstall program for years. Here is some information that I thought that you would find useful . . .

     Revo Uninstaller - FREE

    About Revo Uninstaller - FREE:

    The Uninstaller module is Revo Uninstaller ‘s primary feature for situations when a program won’t uninstall normally or when you have some doubts that a program has not been uninstalled completely.

    Also when a program is uninstalled, often times there are multiple files, folders, and/or Registry entries left on your system, which can cause various issues if not removed. This happens more frequently than you might think.

    Revo Uninstaller acts as both a replacement and a supplement to the built-in functionality in Windows by first running the built-in uninstaller for the program, and then scanning for leftover data afterwards, making it your best choice when it comes to completely remove stubborn programs, temporary files, and other unnecessary program data that is left behind after the standard uninstall process.

    I find that when uninstalling software, Revo Uninstaller [ FREE ] is excellent. It has an option to Scan for leftover items after the initial uninstall [ using the software own uninstall process if one exists ] using an Advanced Scan option.

    > Website & Download => Revo Uninstaller [ FREE ]

    I hope this helps.

    @Paul Black

    Thanks for the comments and information.

    As noted above I did use Revo Uninstaller despite my reservations because it seemed to be the only thing that worked.

    After successful use, I even registered Revo Uninstaller Pro mostly as a "donation" in appreciation for Revo Uninstaller contributing to the solution to my problem.

    I don't know if it's useful to keep posting here or not. The best solution has probably already been fully discussed, but, for anyone who may be interested, the original problem is related to some weird interaction with the task bar position and the presence or absence of the News and interests widget.

    I originally had (well, still have) the task bar at the top of the screen and News and interests on, but not visible (it's never visible unless the task bar is at the bottom of the screen).

    It turns out I could have solved the problem by putting the task bar at the left, right, or bottom of the screen, none of which I would have wanted to do, but I could also have moved the task bar to the bottom, turned off News and interests, and moved the task bar back to the top!

    Would have been very simple to do if I had known, but probably better to have cleaned out whatever was causing the strange interactions of these things.

    [QUOTE=Bob Coleman;2281725]Thanks for that. I'll experiment some more.

    What do you consider the latest OpenShell? 4.4.160 or 4.4.169?

    - - - Updated - - -

    I don't know about 4.4.169, but I'm using 4.4.168, and one of the big fixes in that version, was to fix interaction problems between OpenShell and Stardock's WindowBlinds skinning package, both of which I am very devoted to!!

    Hi, Master Wales;
    Thank you for these links... could you clarify something for me??
    What are the character strings after 4_4_170 reflecting?
    Your links here show 'mysbqulj', but the Version History refers to two other later updates with different strings, and the Download Page link, after selecting Current Build and then Artifacts tab, shows fpwrxbaq, which appears to correlate to the latest of the Version History updates... are those just build codes or something??
