@f23948, I am using CCleaner Free v5.88.9346 (64-bit) w/o any issues and I like to whitelist the cookies that are most important to me along with Microsoft Edge Chromium & that's it.

I do not use CCleaner Free to wipe Free Space or any other features.

When Avast first took it over, I didn't use CCleaner Free for a couple of months due to the complaints I was reading about but once I started using it again, I've been fine.

You use Firefox ESR as your browser. Have you inquired within Firefox ESR support about using CCleaner?
--- I'm not familiar with using Firefox ESR, but maybe they have the capability to do what CCleaner is supposed to do?

Since CCleaner has messed up your PC, are you able to recover your PC?

I stopped updating CCleaner at version 5.78
I only use Custom Clean and Registry, and use the cookies window to allow commonly used site's cookies.

And you can also see what I blocked in my firewall...
Everything else in CCleaner, I don't use, and have disabled.

Used like I use it, has never given me problems.

CCleaner has a driver updater facility that seems to work on the same lines as the old cowboy registry cleaner scams -

click here to speed up your pc
you download a so-called optimizer (and lord knows what else)
    the scan finds 3,000 'errors'
click here to fix > but the fix costs £££££

    My test >

First I made a full Macrium image of my very up to date Windows 11 computer.

Then I clicked CC driver updater. The 'software' found 21 out of date drivers. I clicked to update, only to find I needed to sign up for a CC Premium trial (with a view to buying the full version) in order to get my driver updates.

I clicked OK to sign up, OK to update the drivers.

In about 5 milliseconds it said updated 1, not required 20. From my experience of driver updates, nothing updates in 5ms. It was a scam.

I put my Macrium usb in, clicked restart and was back to normal in 10 minutes.

    YMMV of course...

ccleaner is a tool in my bag that i will use once i have exhausted all of my other options. If things are still broken, I will use a tool like ccleaner to see if I can resolve the issue.

So, i never use ccleaner as a proactive maintenance tool.

Avast (Avast becoming Norton) is not real CCleaner
Former Piriform used to be real CCleaner
