Ah ok, I am doing this from a laptop, so I don't have a secondary data hard drive.

Then I guess I was confusing having a HDD with a thumb drive.

Can I just do everything on my C: drive then transfer the final ISO to the USB drive?

You could create a separate Partition.

If you had a data drive we would normally suggest using it, but as you haven't, yes, you can use your C: drive, but you need to be just that little more careful with what your doing, or if it's large enough you can do as Paul suggests above

It has to be done that way? I can't just use the C: drive?

I think this laptop only has a 64gb drive and only like 20 are free. I don't even have any programs on this computer really. Its just to surf.

Ah ok great, it might be easier that way. I actually only have like 10gb left with these few programs I've downloaded. I'm going to try and clean things up and run everything from my C: drive. I'll report back once I've completed everything later.

    Thanks for the info everyone!

    Got it, thanks!

Any idea what I need to do to my USB drive to put a larger file on to it?

Because of my limited space, it may just work best to have the created file saved on the USB instead of my C: drive

I would assume I can choose where I want the finished file to save right?

Personally, I just use the Rufus prog to format and copy the iso image in one go, be careful to select the correct drives

It's a utility already part of XPE in the Create ISO script, in the 'Copy to USB' section

(Create ISO script -->Left hand pane of the Project near bottom) use after your ISO image has been created

*** I'm sure it's obvious to you, but make sure you are formatting your D: drive (USB stick) NOT your C: drive, if your doing it that way. Also make sure, there's nothing on the USB stick you want to keep

So to recap, you can if you wish
Having successfully created your Win10XPE iso, go to the CreateISO script and click on the Rufus button (and check the rufus configuration) and follow prompts and it will format your usb drive and copy the iso to it.

@johnnyscience You can run everything from your C:\ With no problems

I do the same Because in a laptop creating a new partition for data does not put the files on another support

Anyway you end up with a Windows partition that is near full and a data partition near empty... So I always remove it on new laptops.

Run "everything" from C:\ in a Standard laptop... If the hd breaks "everything" is on the same drive anyway.

If you have an high end workstation things could be different... But today's laptops are so fast... Who would buy one.

So basically install XPE on your hard Drive mount or or use an extracted folder of your source from your hard drive.

if you want to only mount your source I suggest "Virtual CloneDrive" This programs is easy to use and the driver is Fast.

Finally got Shadow Explorer working and after all that, none of the restore points were any good. None of them could be exported for use. Bummer.

Time for a Clean Install. I backed up all the users data (there wasn't much) and would do a reset saving nothing and see how that goes.

    Thanks everyone for the help.

Note: The shadowcopyview 7Z was not a 64 bit versions and did not work as far as I could tell. Got a message saying "On 64 bit system, you must use the 64-buit version of the tool!" then Error 0x89942302

Ok... For me the 64 bit version didn't run on 64 builds... Strange, I verified before posting....

Me too... I nearly never recovered a working hive with that...

Now I use Tweaking.com Registry Backup And it works off the bat.

20GB could be a tough sell - with the Program itself, the Program Applications, The Source OS and the ISO - takes quite a bit of space

Yeah, OP could perhaps try creating a wintogo external usb drive (128 GB minimum) and use that.

However in a low end laptop, it may be rather slow.
