how block automatic HP Support Assistant update to latest version

To be clear, the old version works super for me, but I have had to use System Restore 2x to undo the unasked-for, undesired latest version. The old version on the taskbar indicates info and updates ... but the latest version gives me a totally UNWANTED "warning" to buy a new battery ... which makes me open Support Assistant uselessly (only wish to update drivers if needed, for ex.).

After HP's calibration AND the Windows Batt Test, the battery has 89% new capacity. I will NOT change the batt. till well below 60% new capacity.

Problem for me is getting me to needlessly check the taskbar warning for something I do not want to be warned about. The old version does not ask me to ... and I manage the battery use.manually with software help to keep it between 40% and 80% charge.

I have found no way to disable this "feature" in the latest version nor how to prevent HP automatically updating to the latest version.

    Consider uninstalling HP Support Assistant.

Download and install HP Diagnostic Windows version 1.6.9.0:

    Post battery test results.

how block automatic HP Support Assistant update to latest version

Perhaps I was not clear enough: I am a Physicist plus Engineer, have worked wth chief engineers from the top battery manufacturer in the world for my mass-mkt products, buying LIPOS, etc., in the 10's of thousands for them.

    1. I very well know HOW to use and test my laptop bettery

When I need to, I use:

Windows Battery Test Report ... it is MUCH better than HP's since it uses far more DATA!!

    cmd admin: powercfg /batteryreport

    file:///C:/Windows/System32/battery-report.html

    2. I do NOT want HP telling me what to do with my battery! I do NOT want HP telling me to use the HP Battery Test unless I choose to. I do NOT want HP telling me to calibrate my battery. Most importantly, I do NOT want to get "warnings" from HP about my battery! I constantly monitor the charge status of the battery (with the help of Windows and other software I installed)

    3. I DO want to get HP info ONLY about needed or available DRIVER and BIOS updates, etc.

    4. I want to either disable ONLY this "feature" in the LATEST Support Assistant or BETTER YET, to prevent another auto-update to the latest Support Assistant.

I think it's obvious that you know how to take care of your HP, so I second zbook's suggestion that you uninstall the offending program. You already have the battery monitoring taken care of, and you can easily check the HP site periodically to see whether BIOS updates or new drivers are available. Just dump the annoyance.

You also clearly are aware that the fact that a new version of the BIOS or a new driver is available doesn't mean you need it, and you might be asking for trouble if you just take it "because it's there."

    Hello @Airider,

I have had quite a few HPs. I would recommend that you Uninstall HP Support Assistant as there is really nothing useful in having it. You can get ANY Updates or Drivers directly from the Manufacturers Website if you ever need to.

Have a look at this => Uninstalling HP Support Assistant

    I hope this helps.

Just adding my 2 cents. Mine updated on 07/02/2021, and now it's this big thing with so much unneeded display stuff. Plus I can't even log in. I click "sign in", and enter my user name and password, and it asks if I want to stay logged in, and after I click yes, it just loops back to the same log in screen (same if I click "no"). It apparently is logging me in because if I check on their website (and it shows it's using Chrome 70 WOW), it shows I logged in, but the Assistant refuses to show that. I just keep seeing "Create account / Sign in" at the top right. UGH

I wouldn't agree that there is nothing useful. It does give updates for certain things that normally you would have to go look for to see if there are updates (IE: BIOS that you could really screw up with downloading the wrong one, but the Assistant makes sure it's correct). I've gotten useful updates from it myself.

Thanks for all the sound advice. I have already easily deleted the new version (using Apps in Settings) as a test before getting back the good-old old version using System Restore. I do like finding out about some driver updates and I have gotten used to only getting unimportant "messages" with the taskbar warnings symbol ... so if they only "warn" me about the battery once a week, and that's all, I suppose I can also live with that "feature" and disregard it as I do their "informative" messages.

Meanwhile I will leave this thread open to see if someone knows how to block the new-version update.

Too bad people love to fix or improve things that ain't broke ... (forcing this unneeded new version, for ex.)

Had you considered other HP software for HP 840?

I don't use HP Support Assistant. For my HP ProBook I use HP Image Assistant which scans your PC and provides various recommendations including driver updates which you can then install automatically or manually. See http://ftp.ext.hp.com//pub/caps-softpaq/cmit/HPIA.html
