Need recommendation for a file renamer

Have an awful lot of image files to rename

need something like YY-MM-DD of picture taken from Exif data, then a sequential number, then my text

E.g. 2013-08-23-007-My holiday in Bognor

tried file renamer basic, which I have used for years, but seems to only be able to use the current date, then there is an Exif namer, but although it uses the created date ( not date taken ) it appends the files with a number 1-10 I think, but no choice to remove this and no option to add text, looked at bulk file renamer but looks so complicated, can’t work out how to use it.

any suggestions please ?

Your requirements are not defined. What exactly are your desired instructions for the renaming operations?
- Make sure you include instructions for where my text comes from.
- If you cannot specify where my text comes from then you might as well use NameExif or an equivalent and just work through adding my text manually afterwards.

Thanks, I really thought I had defined ‘my requirements ‘ very precisely.

can’t think how else to explain it really, except….

need to rename multiple image files, with the Date the picture was taken, followed by a sequential number 001,002,003 etc. Then my OWN text which would be the same for each file e.g. my holidays

At first glance, it might look a bit complex, but once you you go through their user guide it will make sense. It won't take you long before you start making your own custom batch preferences. Besides renaming files, you can move them to new locations and even automatically create custom folders for those files!

It does video, music, and image files (and probably some others that I don't know of the top of my head).

It even has a TV show renamer function — which is what I used it for — and it was a godsend! I wanted to make a media server for a bunch of TV shows that I had on hard drive, and after trying a few other options I found that this program was the best and it's FREE! And of course, if you use and appreciate this software, donations are good karma.

Anyway, it worked really well for me. I like how customizable it was and how fast it worked through the files. Having a your media files named and organized also helps to make using the media server easier.

Looks extremely powerful and should do what I need, as you say, I will need to spend some time exploring the options amd functions, can’t see a TAG for ‘ date picture taken’ ???

That's what was missing.

You can use NameExif if you want.

I tried that Denis, using the custom method, it uses the current date to name the files, obviously need the date picture taken,+ “mu holidays”

or am I missing something ?

It uses the date taken [as my example shows].

I don't know how to make it use the current date so I don't know what might have happened in your case.

Will have another look, also it numbers each file, but only 1-10 as far as I remember, will run it again and post back here

If I have understood their website correctly, the sequential numbers are only added as a means of avoiding identical filenames.

This is a set of six files that I copied twice then put through NameExif.


So it does not meet your requirements after all.

Curious why a user would want to name several files with today’s date….especially as has EXIF in the title
will persevere with Advance Renamer, looks like that may fit the bill, especially if I can work out how to use the date picture taken TAG
