Curious why a user would want to name several files with today’s date
If you are referring to the files I used as my test files it was date & time not just date, they just happened to be a set of photos taken with my phone's camera and were taken within a few tens of seconds of each other so I could review them on the computer to decide which were the ones worth keeping.

In your case, keeping the time in the title might be of use if you visited several places in the same day. To my mind, that would be even better than using the sequence numbers you mentioned.

You can play around with the following Bulk Rename Utility and Advanced Renamer (3.84) settings to see some possibilities:
You can load the respective setting after you have selected the image files in BRU or AR , and hopefully they show the new names.

    HolNum.zip

In Advance Renamer, if you want the Hour Min Sec as well, the format to use is
    Code:
    <Img Year>-<Img Month>-<Img Day> <Img Hour>-<Img Min>-<Img Sec>
    Advanced Renamer - Image tags

In Bulk Renamer (which I personally find easier to work with), you use the drop down in box 8 (Fmt) and then shift the insertion of sequence numbers in box 10. Also, in Bulk Renamer, enable use of EXIF data by going to Menu > Renaming Options > ID3/EXIF Data/File Prop > & tick Extract EXIF Data.

Why do the dates from "Picture Taken" and "Creation date" differ shouldn't they be the same? Or does the "creation date" change to the date when you copy the pictures to your computer?

Just did some research, although all metadata can be ‘ manipulated’ the date taken Tag should not change unless specifically changed with Software or through file properties. However as I understand it, the creation date can change if the file is modified…….so they are independent I believe

Will check a few files and verify

The "Creation Date" doesn't change if you modify a file. There are 3 basic file dates that Windows works with: "Creation Date", "Last Modified" and "Last Access". If you modify a file "Last Modified" and "Last Access" changes but not "Creation Date"....

If you copy a file the "Creation Date" of the copy changes to the date when you made the copy but the original files "Creation Date" stays the same.

Thanks, so all the image files I move to new folders for renaming will have the creation date changed, thereby not useable as a date taken tag…..so still need advanced renamer to use the date taken tag, not found how to do this yet

thanks for the explanation it did help

    RedDwarf,

When you first copy the photos to your computer, does the Modified date still match the date taken?
    - right-click on the file, select Properties and it displays the Created & the Modified date-times

Actually the "creation date" shouldn't change when you move a file in Windows. But I tested it here by moving photos from my phone to Windows 10 and all photos have the "Creation Date" of today (the time they where moved). But the "Modified Date" still seems to be the same as "Date Taken".

I suspect this is because my Android phone uses a different File System than Windows (NTFS), Android (ext4?).

Anyway you could make a batch or powershell script that changes the names based on Creation, Modified or Last Access. If you use the help of a tool that can read Metadata from the command line you can also use "Date Taken".

In this example I use the "Date Modified" date right after coping the files from phone to computer:
