    ... But, no go.
Tried it several times and it always comes back to Arial.
Is strange, since "logically" this approach makes sense.

For now I'll stick with what I have and look into your recommended alternative as well as others I can fine. @Wisewiz, Thanks for sticking with me!

I was enjoying following this thread & hoping to see a solution for Notepad but not surprised that M$ has other priorities.

As time passes, not quite the same as aging... I have come to detest any bright white screens with any program.
I use Windows 10 Home set to Dark,
Vivaldi browser set to Dark theme with a Dark Reader extension and any other app I can find that supports Dark.

My preference for a Notepad substitute is Black Notepad.

It has multiple fonts to choose from, multiple font colours & background colours and 5 shortcuts for your preferred settings.
It also supports .bat & .vbs the same as Notepad.

I've configured Black Notepad as my default txt app and rarely see the blinding white of Notepad.

    You're most welcome.

BTW, I see they offer a Shareware license, I've never paid a penny for the app.
FYI, I downloaded it from MajorGeeks just now for no cost.

There are several Notepad substitutes you can test, I just enjoy this dark version.

Hey, W10 T, I wouldn't call our suggestions for jdU "substitutes" at all. I'd call them vastly superior replacements for anemic software.

    Agreed.

I should have also mentioned that Black Notepad is only 726 KB and a portable app with no installation required.

    Download Black NotePad - MajorGeeks

It appears the latest version of Black Notepad is far more elaborate than the older version I've been using, they've added tabs and other helpful features.

I'm not certain if this app has always had a trial version with limitations on the free version, however; I've always found the free version to be loaded with features. According to this screenshot from Wintools, the author, the free version has "minor limitations".

This is additional word search info.

On the upper right side, there's a text box. It accepts * as a wildcard (*.txt) or you can just type a word in and click the magnifying glass. To the right of the hour glass, the Ab icon is a case sensitive switch filter that toggles on or off.

Then use F3 for next or shift F3 for previous. At the bottom of the Black Notepad window, it will indicate how many instances of your search word exist and which one is currently highlighted. This example shows we're looking at #2 of 9 hits for the word Power.

If there's any more questions on the use of Black Notepad, feel free to ask.

"Portable/No installation" makes me wonder ... Will I be able to set it up as the default App when double clicking a *.txt file?
    Thx

I have my PC configured to use Black Notepad for .txt extensions.

Search & launch 'Default Apps'. Then click 'Choose default apps by file type'.

Scroll down to .txt, you will likely see the default app as Notepad. Click on that, a window will open showing several options, select Black Notepad.

You bet. Select a .txt file in File Explorer, right-click, Open With, Choose another app, More apps, Look for another app on this PC, navigate to the executable, click, Always Use.

I keep wondering where that Arial comes from, and it occurred to me that one safe thing you didn't try is replacing C:\Windows\System32\Notepad.exe on your PC with a copy of the equivalent from your notebook computer. I'm not really hopeful that it'll fix the problem, but it should be easy enough to give it a try.

No, on second thought, there's another safe option you didn't try: Go back to LM Soft Mic Notepad check to see whether Consolas is in DefaultFonts, and if so, proceed to next step; if not, change lfFaceName to Consolas. Then go back to our old stomping ground HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Notepad
Right-click on the Notepad key in the left pane, and then select Delete from the pop-up menu.

Close regedit, reboot, and there's a better than fair chance (I'll betcha) when you open Notepad It'll be in Consolas.

(You can tell I'm still worrying the question about where in the Windows Secret Universe that Arial setting is stored.)
