    reconnect orphaned applications via saved registry


    Hi,
    New member here. I have a ten yr old HP Pavilion desktop running winver 2004.
    I saved the old registry after some apps started to get really flaky.
    I saved all the Program Files, Program Files(x86) and Users\appdta.

    Then I tried rescue, that failed. then I bought newest load of WIN10 and installed.
    Many of my apps did not get reinstalled as I no longer have the media - or they were installed from web.
    They are not in the new registry.

    Question: Can one copy - by application - the appropriate hives from the saved registry?

    I read about "Merge" and the verbiage implies that will overwrite the just created new registry.

    I don't want that, I want selective merging.

    Hi, restoring a program from such data is near enough impossible.

    To answer one simple question - yes, you can merge information from a correctly formatted .reg file into an existing registry. Your problem is that you don't have any.

    How should you have protected yourself?
    a. Used disk imaging regularly and routinely as is endlessly recommended here.
    b. Kept backups of your downloads or source media so you could reinstall them.

    Note that if the programs are several years old, they may be incompatible with your more recent O/S, and out of date.

    Very often it's possible to find programs on the net if still available- and in some cases even when not.

    There are 3rd party programs that extract programs from one O/S (or a disk image of one) and transfer them to another- but the source O/S must be intact.

    Hi,
    I do have a saved and intact registry. I do have saved and accessible applications. What I no longer have is the install disks.
    So Damn Near Impossible is still possible.
    The saved registry has all the entries from when the applications were install. Ex: quicken.
    The saved Program Files folders and User\Appdata have all the installed programs, .dlls, .cabs etc.
    I want to know if there is a tool that will read the saved registry and pull all the quicken e.g. data out and ADD - not overwrite anything to the new registry? Then is I move the saved program and data back to the newly restored drive, and reboot, Windows should see the now current Quicken e.g. information and allow quicken to start up.
    I realize I may have no icons, but the programs and their links should be functional.
