I'm looking for a software that allows to browse/inspect the content of a disk (ssd, hdd etc.) when the device is shut down, if it also allows to copy the content to a usb it'd be excellent. I can't find any, to what kind of software category/type does a software like this belong to? Can you provide few suggestions?
To browse the contents of an SSD or HDD, it has to be powered on.
there is software that boots up at startup and then allows you to inspect the content of the whole disk, but I can't recall any nor the category to which it belong to search for it.
I think what you are asking is, "Are there is methods of browsing your disks without Windows running.".

1 You can boot from a Windows InstallUSB then use its Command prompt to browse disk contents. You can even run Notepad and use its Open dialog to browse around visually [it acts like a rudimentary File explorer].
2 You can boot from a Ubuntu USB [without having to install Ubuntu] and use its File explorer equivalent to browse your disks.

3 There are other 'repair' USBs that people have put together containing a host of tools including File explorer equivalents.
Never be alarmed by the drive letters assigned to each disk/drive when booting from USBs.
- Each OS, such as the temporary OSs run by USB boot disks, has its own rules for how to assign drive letters so they can differ from those assigned by booting into Windows.
- Windows will, when you boot normally again, continue to assign the drive letters it always has.

yes I'm aware of that option but I remember I used several years ago a little program that could be run from usb at boot time and let you browse the disk, if someone could just suggest a similar software or remind me the "category" name of these kind of programs that'd be helpful!
