Change "Open with" list items

Hi!

I have difficulties changing open with menu items.


My current open with menu looks like that:


My Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.zip\OpenWith List looks like that:


Why doesnt windows respect My Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.zip\OpenWith List ?

For example VLC and Explorer are not listed there at all for zip. How do they appear?

And gzdoom forexample is listed there but it does not appear in open with menu.

My goal is to add gzdoom for zip files. How do I do it? If I use choose aaother app and check always open ... then it replaces 7zip. I dont want that. I still want to keep 7z as default choice, I just want to add gzdoom to that menu.

I also found suggestion to look at \HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications"ProgramName.exe"\SupportedTypes

But that is also confusing for me because for example Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\7zFM.exe does not even have SupportedTypes but windows still knows what it can open.

Leave 'Always open with...' un-checked.

This Nir Sofer utility shows gzdoom on the list, I also tried to add it with this old program that you linked but windows explorer seems to ignore this.

Also the suggestion that I leave 'Always open with...' un-checked. resulted in that it opened it once but never added it to open with list permanently. It stays top open with dialog but not to context menu.

Default Programs Editor Default Programs Editor finally managed to do that. But I didnt really like the fact that I had to download separate program to do something that could simply be done using regedit.

GZDoom is modern port for Doom ZDoom - Downloads.

Is it capable of opening zip files?

Does it matter?
I mean windows should list it in menu because I tell it do so, not because if program supports it. If windows is secretly reading the actual bytecode of exe itself and deciding that it does not support zip files and therefore user must not be able to add it to open with menu then M$ seriously needs to be DDOSed with bug reports till they remove this feature of windows But I don't really think that's the case.

How do I tell windows from regedit that program is capable? I tried to follow some tutorial but it didnt work. Yes in my case it is capable but since it is extracted and not installed there are no registry keys about it.

So basically yea in my case the question is how to fore notepad to be offered for docx files.

The original question was not if gzdoom can extract zip files or not, the original question was how to add programs to open with list despite of their capabilities. Let's keep focus on main question.

If I make HelloWorld.exe in C language that simply prints "Hello World" in console then I must be able to tell windows that for zip files it must be included in open with menu (menu != dialog) and if that HelloWorld.exe can't deal with zip files then it this exe's problem, but windows as operating system should still allow me to modify open with menu so that in addition to 7zip it would show my own custom.

As can be seen from screenshot on my original post, VLC is also not in your list but it is listed in my menu despite of that.

Also worth noting that it does not unpack zip files, it reads resources from them.
