DESPERATELY NEED HELP: OpenOffice App Is Running Very Strangely...

    Hi all,

I just rebooted my Windows 10 Pro PC(fully updated) and I opened OpenOffice and it gave me an error saying "OpenOffice 4 Fatal Error" and now every word that I type in OpenOffice comes up as being misspelled even where are no spelling errors...

I'm running OpenOffice version 4. I know it's old, but I've been using it so long because it always worked fine until today...

I really hope someone can help me because OpenOffice is my main word processing app!

    Thank you.

You might want to consider LibreOffice, it is actively developed.

OpenOffice 4.1.9 was released on Feb 28, 2021 but updates for several years now appear to mainly bug fixes.

When an app stops working, the first thing to do is to download the latest version. If that doesn't work, Uninstall the old version, restart your computer and reinstall the latest version.

Do some basic maintenance tasks from the bottom upwards, there are detailed tutorials for these on here.

    1) HDD/SSD checks.
    2) SFC and DISM checks of your Windows install.
    3) Uninstall OpenOffice, and then re-install.

I'm on OpenOffice 4.1.8, the auto-update module is never installed. It works fine, update will be done in due course but obviously there is no need for the latest version as such.

    Your replies are much appreciated!

I've been browsing the website openoffice.org which looks like the Official website for OpenOffice.

Can anyone tell me if this is a safe URL to download from? How can I check if it's a safe link to download from?

Link: Download Apache OpenOffice from SourceForge.net

    Thank you!

Their Certificate is valid, it's most likely safe.
It's merely a mirror site that promotes Apache's software for free in lieu of advertising...

The link is valid. It is the download link from the OpenOffice main website.

    However read what follows...

Ten years ago the developers of OpenOffice had a fallout.

Some went on to use the OpenOffice code to develop a new program called LibrOffice.

The ones that stayed behind continued OpenOffice with support from Apache.

Over the last 10 years development of OpenOffice has stagnated with no major updates in 5 years. However, the development of LibrOffice has continued with regular updates.

Today most people recommend that LibreOffice is used instead of OpenOffice.

A historical note: both LibreOffice and OpenOffice have their roots in the old Sun Microsystems StarOffice. For my older clients that upgraded their computers I preferred LibreOffice as it still opens their Works files, usually recipes they had created. Last I looked at OpenOffice showed some formats are no longer supported.
