I'm a big fan of Xnview with lots to offer, and plenty to be overwhelmed by. Noting your interest in stable viewing windows, here's a setting you can play with that you might find valuable for varying sizes of photos. Hope you enjoy the app as much as I have.

Odd I can see my attachment in both my original post and your quote. Perhaps a forum delay? In any event, here it is again.

one easy solution is to use a free lightweight open source utility like "mass image compressor" to reformat your images..... it's not practical for a few photos but if you have a large batch it works great! fwiw i've tried the photo viewers mentioned in this thread (and more), and have much liked a lot of them, in fact i use "imagine" as a fallback, but for everyday use it's hard to beat the speed and ease of use that wpv offers (imo)!
