    Java, or Not

I have Java 6 on my system. Years ago I updated to the latest version, and something went wrong (no remembrance of what that was). I went back to the version I just left (6), and that solved the problem. I've had it ever since. I'm not technical, know nothing about Java other than what little I read, and have no idea if I really need this on my machine. I'm thinking about updating to the latest version. If something went wrong I could easily restore a system image.

    Any thoughts? Thanks.

If you don't specifically "need" java on your system, then you should remove it.
Java, like Flash has always been a security headache.

If you don't specifically "need" it... remove it.

Again, I said I don't know if I need this thing. Thanks.

Well... uninstall it. Then in a few days or weeks, you'll "know" if you do.
And if you do, you can always re-install it.

It's not and all or nothing deal.

I'll think about it. But if I need it and the current version causes problems and I can't get back to 6, I won't be pleased. Maybe there are archives, like with Flash. I looked at Java's website; made it sound like it's all but indispensable. Is there some way to see if it's needed--maybe search the C: drive and see if it's referenced somewhere? Thanks.

Yeah, you can always find the older versions. For example...

I just looked at the 3 browsers I use. To be precise, this is what I have:
    1. Java Deployment Toolkit 7.0.400.42 10.40.2.43
    2. Java Platform SE U34 6.0.340.4

In all browsers the activation option is set to "Ask to Activate," and the "Always Activate" option is disabled. I've never been asked to activate. This implies to me that I've never needed it and can safely remove it. Does this sound right?

Also, I recently downloaded UnGoogled-Chromium to experiment/play with it. Apparently at this point there are no addons/plugins/extensions like Java, Widevine, Silverlight, etc., on this browser at all. I don't really know how any of this stuff works. I don't think I've ever intentionally downloaded any of these things; they just seem to be there.

I appreciate all the responses I'm getting. Thanks.

I uninstalled Java in Programs and Features. The Java folder remained in W10 Start Menu. It had 5 entries in it. I was able to delete 2, so 3 remain. I then ran Java's uninstall tool, but it said Java wasn't on my machine.

Also, Java Development Toolkit v7 remains, and there's no discernible way to get rid of it.

How can I get rid of these things?

Also, can I get recommendations for some sort of complete-uninstall tool? How do they work; do I run it and it looks for remnants that it can somehow identify as leftover stuff from previous uninstalls, or do I tell it somehow what to look for? Or do I use IT to do the uninstall to begin with?

    Thanks.

I would re-install w/e Java you had, then use Revo Uninstaller to uninstall Java.
After the basic uninstall, it will scan for registry leftovers. After those are removed...it will scan again for any other leftovers.
