I must admit that a few years ago I used to use AVG - FREE because I would NOT use Windows Defender. Today though, I do use Windows Defender. It has come a LONG way over the last few years and is now a pretty decent Antivirus program.

There are quite a few FREE Antivirus programs out there, and I am sure that members will come forward with what they use and the reasons why.

I just did some investigating for you and came across these . . .

    > 5 Best (REALLY FREE) Antivirus Software for Windows [2021]

    I hope this helps.

And remember, if you go 3rd party free anti virus/malware, you get the same value that you paid for.

Honestly, I'd recommend Windows Defender. It comes included with Windows 10, does not show any ads & is not obtrusive. However, it is a bit resource hungry (maxes out my Xeon E3-1231 v3 when doing a full scan & it also likes to eat disks as well).

The quick scan is sufficient on a regular basis. A full scan can take a very long time, and is not necessary unless the quick scan finds something bad, then a full scan is warranted. Defender has the smarts to keep you out of trouble and knows where to look with the quick scan.

I'm not sure. Maybe once a week/month. A full scan takes a while to complete (about an hour on my system - Windows 10 Pro 20H2 x64 on an SSD) & it consumes a lot of resources. The time it takes for scans to finish depends on your CPU & whether you have an SSD or HDD as your Windows drive.
