    PDF thumbnails broken in windows

It’s never worked great but pdf thumbnails in explorer seems pretty broke in windows 10. I don’t know if it’s the latest CU update or a recent update to Adobe reader (both have occurred last few days) but now just get generic Adobe icons for pdf.

the old trick to open Adobe reader and select open file and navigate to my folder with pdfs to force generating no longer works. By doing that explorer would then later show the thumbnails in its own. I even uninstalled under preferences the feature to allow thumbnails to generate and then reinstalled it but no joy.

anyone else have similar grief ? Any idea on how to make this work?

My version is Adobe acrobat reader DC 21.001.20135

    thanks

Thank you. Think I sussed it. One or both of these was the fix. Suspect the latter. First I installed Sumatra pdf and made sure to check the option to allow it to enabling handling of pdf previews (even though my issue was not the preview window but the thumbnail).

that was kind of doing the trick. But I noticed in my folder with many pdfs it was redrawing the thumbnails every time. Takings a few seconds. I then selected one file, made a copy, pasted it in same location. Deleted the original and renamed the copy to the original file name. Noticed that this ‘new’ file was holding its thumbnail and never being redrawn on entering the folder unlike all the others. Took a while but did it to the rest. All good. Checked again after restart and still fine. Suspect Adobe not doing it’s job regarding thumbnails on ‘older existent’ files but any new ones will be ok

I am glad that it is resolved.
