    XML Files

Hi folks! Just registered to this forum and glad to have found it.

So I was installing Ubuntu on my computer which already had windows 10.I wanted to have a dual OS. Things went south and windows got deleted/ over written or whatever.

I used a hard drive recovery device to recover as many files as I can from the windows partition.
It recovered everything that matters like pdf files and pictures.

The recovered material is about 100 Gigs.

A majority of the 100 gigs seems to be XML files.
Since I already recovered the pdf and picture files, can I go ahead and delete these XML files?
What are these XML files anyway?

I just don’t want any important files being masked as XML files and end up deleting them.

Can someone tell me if I should keep these XML files forever?

I really want to delete those 100 gigs of recovered files from my other laptop that was used to recover the files from the hard drive.

    Thanks

Hello theStand1 and welcome to TF ,
Is there a folder or folder names associated with the bulk of these .xml files?

I just check my C: drive and found upwards of 15k xml files totaling > 1.4 GB, so I the files you have appear pale in comparison - if I was you, I'd leave them alone as they look important enough to me that I won't be deleting mine

Hi Steve108, the recovery tool extarcted all the files from the hardrive and randomly stuck them in about 2500 folders. So the XML files are spread out over 2500 folders. Also, the folders are generically names recover_1, recover_2 etc.

Ugh! Mine are in folders related to applications. If I was you, once you get your PC working fine, then delete these recovered .xml files - just in case they could be helpful in the mean time. Does that make sense?

Also mine weren't concentrated in a specific folder either, but most are in folders under c:\program files\

I am sorry, I don't understand what you mean.
I fear if I delete these XML files is that the XML files might be pdf files in reality, but just show up as XML files. Is it possible that the XML files are really pdf/ jpeg files just showing up as XML files? Ty

Try to open one or more of the recovered XML file - unlike the other files like pdf and jpeg files, XML files are plain text files that can be read with any text capable application like Notepad.

Didn't you say it recovered picture and pdf files? Did you confirm some of those open correctly as pictures or pdf files?
