Is Java Runtime Environment A Dangerous Install?

I want to install and use FreeMind, a mind mapping program but it does require Java Runtime Environment to work. I know there are plenty of other programs for this but I like this one. There are some nice ones that are online only but I hate online only software with a few exceptions and mind-mapping online? Ummm... no thanks.

I've heard mixed feedback on whether Java is dangerous or not. Thoughts?

I see no problem using Java (I prefer Costco medium roast) for that program. You have AV AM AS background-running programs, you should ok. And, you have been making routine backups, correct?

It's safe to use, if you keep it updated! ....download the latest Windows Offline Installation and save it to your desktop. jre-8u271-windows-x64

Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.

    • Go to Start > Control Panel click on Settings-> Apps-> Programs and Features, then Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
    • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
    • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
    • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.

Then from your desktop, double-click on the offline installation to install the newest version.

Java is no longer in fashion because of .NET which is part of OS.

Both Java and .NET are same thing in that they're both managed run time environments.

The only reason why you would need Java is if you need to install some program that depends on Java runtime.
Otherwise Java is safe software but no longer popular since most new managed software runs on .NET.
