    Media player numeric playlists

Just installed WMP that came with a new dell g5 win10 pro laptop. I see how to create and add to my own playlist.

But what are all the numeric playlists? Some are empty, some have something in them including "blank_audio", "asx", fm stations, others. I clicked on one and it changed to "BBC World Service" but they all say it can't connect to the server. Another error message said win7 was not supported and to switch to a win10 machine(?).

So far I can't delete them to clean up the directory and leave only what I want. What can I do?

Was this a backup or copy from another computer?

In WMP - click on Organise, Manage libraries and work your way through Music, Videos, Pictures, Recorded TV and note the folder paths they identify..

In File explorer, look in each of the folders you found. They contain the Playlists you have seen. WMP playlists are normally .wpl files but WMP can recognise playlists with other extensions [created by other media applications]. One way or another, you created or copied in those playlists.

Also - check if you have enabled media streaming from the internet. Open Task manager, click on the Services tab, find the entry for WMPNetworkSvc and make sure it is stopped.

    Thanks @jacee and try*3

(new to this system -- subject line only difference? quick reply accepts attachments? character length limit?)

@Jacee the files on the new laptop came from a NAS that was populated by direct drag-n-drop copy from a macbook.

@Try*3 when I search for (random) 7766 I'm getting all kinds of locations for the same file name. I understand simple duplicate file locations, but this seems to be different. The system generated these but I don't know how.

    Lew,

What folders were shown in the library checks I suggested?

Are those the folders you are searching in with your posted screenshots?

You can set any folder or your search results to show Details [it's in the View menu, it makes it look like the last of your screenshots above]
    and
you can then right-click in any column header to select More... then Folder path [not one of the other Folder … choices as they are not half as useful].

It's much more likely that you imported them.

In WMP, when I click on Organize/Manage Libraries/Music, I see this:
    Media player numeric playlists-0music-lib.png

In file explorer, the first level directories for Music are:
    Media player numeric playlists-00top-music-dir.png

Not familiar with WMP. Came from VLC and winamp (long ago). Normally I get mp3s from amazon, set them up in music/artist/album/song hierarchy. I don't know about importing.

[Similarly, IDK how the clip below is still showing up. I replaced it with the one above, with more explicit path. It's not in the code for this message.]

Do check Videos, Pictures, Recorded TV as well. Whilst you are only interested in sorting out music, one of them might be affecting proceedings.
    - I keep all my others empty to make sure they cannot effect anything since I only use WMP Libraries for audio

Whilst WMP will, in your case, normally create its own Playlists in C:\Users\7896l\Music\Playlists it will show any playlist files found in any of its library folder paths.
So you need to search within the 4 WMP library folder paths for Music, Videos, Pictures, Recorded TV.
    - The file might or might not be called 7766 etc.
    - The file will contain the playlist names seen [7766 etc].
    - File explorer search could be used to look within the relevant folder paths but, since you are looking for content, your chosen Indexing options would affect the results.
    - To avoid having to discuss Indexing options while you've still got a mystery to solve, you can search for content using a third-party search tool such as NirSoft's SearchMyFiles

This is a real sample search with the results window in the background.
    Media player numeric playlists-searchmyfiles-many-folders-many-values-real-search-results.png
    - The results shown contained one of the contents terms within their Comments property.
    - The results would also show any playlists in those folders that contained the search terms [WMP playlist files can be read this way and I think others can also be].

This is the search that you need to set up
    Media player numeric playlists-dummy.png
    Notes -
1 I had to guess the other Base folders paths since you only told me what the Music one was
2 Base folder paths are separated by ; and enclosed in "
3 Leave Files wildcard & Subfolders wildcard at their default [*.* and *]
4 In File contains, select Text then enter all the playlist names from your WMP [your post #1] separated by commas. I do not know how to handle the entry with & in it so you could experiment or you could hope that the others will solve the mystery.
5 Set the checkbox for Search multiple values (comma delimited)
6 Set the checkbox for Scan Subfolders in the following depth - Unlimited
7 Set the checkbox for Find files
    8 Click on Start search.

The results dialog will appear and will gradually populate. I do not know how big your media folders are. You might as well stick the kettle on while you're waiting.

Once you have the results, you can examine the playlist files by dropping them into a Notepad window.
    - They display paths in a strange way that is relative to the Music folder path.
    - It might look confusing at first but once you have worked out one of them the others will all become clear.
    - If you cannot see how to interpret a path within a playlist then post it and I can probably convert it for you.

I only mentioned imports because you said you had copied files from somewhere else and I thought that might have included these playlists.

Check your WMP Organise, Options as well. And not just the Library & Player tabs. I stop WMP doing any helpful things such as Add remote media files to the library when played because I think they are extremely unhelpful.

    All the best,
    Denis

Coming back to win after a couple years away. I appreciate all the thought involved in replies above, although there's a lot I don't understand.

However, I want to use my computer, not fiddle under the hood this much. I've simply deleted all the unwanted/not-understood items manually. Not the most elegant solution, but no adverse effects. Some were empty. Some appeared to have been radio stations and other sources -- but none of them worked. I'm left with the ones I want and the ability to create more easily.

    Thanks especially to Try*3.
