Any thread on Windows search seems to inevitably prompts the comparison with 3rd party search tools - a discussion that completely fails to address the initial problem.

Windows search will always be disliked by many because of its default settings, and the need for deeper understanding for correct and appropriate use. And that's when it's working properly- which in this case it oddly isn't.

Thanks, and to you. My New Year resolutions: a. Delete 2020; b. Hibernate (most of us are confined to homes except for essentials, and the virus is spreading rapidly).

Unfortunately as you've deleted the index, rebuilt it, tried repairs, I have no more ideas. I can't imagine what's going on. Perhaps someone else can help.
    Hahaha

    Should I just reinstall Windows?

If no one else has suggestions, that may be the only option.

It doesn't make sense that if you have succeeded in deleting the index and creating a new one that old results are still found.

I don't recall if you've actually inspected the indexed count shown in Indexing options (at the top) and seen it build from 0 as reindexing starts when you choose to rebuild it. If not, try that to demonstrate that rebuilding really is happening.

If the index resets to zero and then starts increasing when you click Rebuild, search indexing would appear to be working normally.

And just to check, are you certain you haven't indexed folders containing items you think are 'old' results?

Try manually limiting what is indexed. You can add those back later. (Indexing Options, Indexed Locations).

Here you go, I manually rebuilt the index and can't find the Filmora app

Check the relevant folder is selected to be indexed.
You will need to enable hidden folders to be shown.

    Path is
    C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs
Search showing old, deleted apps and not showing newly installed apps-1.png

Example: note Network Activity Indicator on the right.

(I chose to search for Activity as like Filmora it is not the first word in the string).

    By way of contrast:
My usual start menu is Open Shell (free):

The start menu location of Wondershare Filmora is actually indexed but it won't show Search showing old, deleted apps and not showing newly installed apps-screenshot-2021-01-03-174424.png

So, why do I need to index program files if the shortcut is already present in the start menu?

Thank you very much for replying.

You're missing the point. The shortcut is in a folder. The start menu comprises two different folders.

If the folder is not indexed, then the shortcuts won't be either.

I don't understand. I can see that the folder in which the shortcut is present in checked for indexing too. Do I need to index program files too?

Ok, if you're sure that's so, what happens if you search for a different program whose shortcut is only present in
    C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

You can also do a simple test- monitor the count shown in Indexed locations, then move one of those shortcuts out of the folder to somewhere that's not indexed temporarily- the count should decrease, then reverse that.

Okay, so I tried the simple test, I removed a shortcut from that location and the index number did actually decrease. And when I added the shortcut back, the index number increased again. Same goes for folder also.

Okay, here is a screenshot of another programSearch showing old, deleted apps and not showing newly installed apps-screenshot-2021-01-05-154723.png
