Asking for help for getting Skype to work

Skype never worked on my Acer laptop with Windows 10 Home 64bit, version 2004 build 19041.685.

Clicking on the app puts me back to the desktop.

    * Camera access is not restricted systemwide. I use it on Zoom regularly.
    * The original system installed Skype version was 15.67.96 0_x86 and that didn't work.
    * Uninstalled it, and downloaded the MS recommended Skype-8.67.0.96 32bit from Skype website and that responds in the same way.
    * I removed both, rebooted and installed it again from the Microsoft store with the same results.

    What am I doing wrong?

The Microsoft store installation is the only working solution. Then, the camera had to be reset and the computer rebooted. Now it's working.

    1. Only Skype for business was bit version sensitive
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/...b-c0c47145944b

Although that has now been replaced by the new Windows Teams app.

    2. Skype for Windows 10 has for sometime (Since 10 version 1609 I think) been ONLY available from the Microsoft Store.

    3. The problem you are having maybe because, the later versions of skype for 10, from the store use the UWP (Universal Windows Platform) process and not the MSI installer
    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/win...platform-guide
and your version of 10 will not recognise the Skype version from the Skype site as being valid for the MSI to install it.

    4. I personally do not use Skype on other than my Android tablets where it works perfectly.
SKYPE on my desktop - Windows 10 is hopeless compared with the old Skype before Microsoft bought it.

    download 8.67.0.97
on this part of the link
The first step in avoiding this is by simply following the link. After that, just close the tab and run the Skype Classic installer in different compatibility mode and with the administrative permissions. That should make it work and resolve the imposed blockage.

I am sorry, but I am not sure what your reply means
Thanks, I've tried both Skype versions
insofar as I do not know if you mean you have tried the desktop version - the link to which I sent you but is on the Skype site and then install in compatibility mode

Or you mean you have tried both the Skype desktop and the Windows 10 store app
As I explained on my post the Windows 10 - Store app for Skype is the best for 10 after version 1608 I think it was
    but certainly on your version.

I only have the desktop versions. I removed the MS installed Skype (!version 15+) which came installed with Windows 2004 and installed version 8.7.0.97. When this didn't work, I reinstalled the version from the store.

    Cheers

I have only just realised that it is now ONE common SKYPE for 10
Introducing an updated, enhanced Skype for Windows 10 | Skype Support

wherever you get it from, so presumably that is why the attempt to download from Skype without selecting 10 on the drop arrow - which then takes you to the store, does not work.
