    Why have I been stopped from transferring apps to my SD card

    It has been my practice for several years to transfer apps from my C Drive to my D drive, an integral SD Card, by checking out which ones can be transferred in Settings. Many can, others cannot me moved. Now I have suddenly started to get the notification below. What has 'having been from a different device' to do with it? I certainly do not want to remove files from the SD Card. What can I do about this?

    Can you copy the SD card apps back to your C drive without a problem?
    If so,then try transferring them back,one at a time to see if the problem recurs.
    Should it be successful then try one of the new apps and see if it is fine.
    It might be a good idea to run---sfc /scannow---and ---dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth---to eliminate any OS file problems,if any.

    I have solved this problem. It seems the SD Card was in process of failing, as it failed completely some days later with a message saying it was corrupted. It is now replaced. The difficulty in transferring the apps has gone. It is the first SD Card failure I have experienced, but it was a few years old so has had good use. If there is a way to repair it I would like to give it a try.

     Linux Live USB/DVD

    A Linux Live USB/DVD is a good method of retrieving data from an otherwise un-bootable drive or if you are having other drive difficulties.

    Basically . . .

    [1] Download the Linux ISO - I always use Linux Mint although there are others available.
    [2] Create a Bootable USB/DVD [ media ] using Rufus for example => Rufus.
    [3] Boot the media.
    [4] Copy the files from the OS to an external HDD/SSD or USB.

    > Download Linux Mint 20 Ulyana

    I hope this helps.

    As to formatting the SD or SDHC card, do you use it in a camera? If so, format it in the camera, doing it in a computer may interfere with the camera's use. SD = up to 2GB SDHC = 4GB and larger, older card readers can't use the SDHC.

    Thanks for the replies. I will consider the Linux idea later is it could be a useful addition to my set-up. My son who is the IT manager for a Building Society is a Linux missionary, though Windows is used by his firm.

    As regards retrieval and re-formatting the SD card Speccy gave a good read out of the contents, but most files were beyond repair plus I could not see much that I now need anyway as I had already re-installed all the Apps (easier on my new but still modest TabletPC than it would have been on its slower predecessor.) I was pleased to find that it formatted successfully, so I have not lost the use of the 30 GB micro card. It was not for my 2 cameras which use physically larger and older cards.
