MS does not like the Photo Viewer , you "should use " the MS-Photo-App .............

You need to create a new shortcut. Windows Photo Viewer is a dll, not an exe.

Right click on the Desktop and select New, Shortcut.

    Photo Viewer-wpv-1.jpg

Put the following in the Type the location of the item input box:

    %windir%\system32\rundll32.exe "%ProgramFiles%\Windows Photo Viewer\PhotoViewer.dll", ImageView_Fullscreen start_location

    start_location
is the folder you want Windows Photo Viewer to open to. It must have at least one image file in it. I used
    \\Kfwserver\hp_h\Canon\Pictures
since all my pictures are on a different computer.

    Click Next.

    Photo Viewer-wpv-2.jpg

Type Windows Photo Viewer in the Type a name for this shortcut box.
    Click Finish.

Now right click on the shortcut on the Desktop and select Pin to Taskbar.

    Photo Viewer-wpv-3.jpg

You're done. You can delete the Desktop shortcut if you want or save it somewhere in case it gets lost again.

Another option is to just forget Photo Viewer even exists and use XnView instead.
You want to scroll down and get the one called "minimal".

XnView . The Best Windows Photo Viewer, Image Resizer and Batch Converter

It's a lot better, and doesn't have these weird Microsoft problems, all the time.
I've been using XnView since the XP days. It does everything.

Thanks,I have created a shortcut to my desktop following your guide but it does not open Photo Viewer,I have pinned it to the taskbar and no joy, what baffles me is when I open Photo Viewer from the start menu unlike other apps it doesn't create a shortcut in the taskbar,I give up.

Right click on the shortcut and click on Properties. Capture an image of it and post here.
Click on the Target box then press Ctrl+A to select all then Ctrl+C to copy it and add that info to your post.

If you have the info entered correctly it will work, if Windows Photo Viewer is enabled (per the link I gave you).

We cling to the old MS Photo Viewer because it is color managed. Do any of the other alternatives honor icc profiles?
